On Saturday 3rd December the local charity Cherish held their annual Christmas Party to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. A host of children who have been helped by the unit over the years attended the event at the hospital, along with their families. The party was supported by companies from far and wide, many of which have close personal ties with the charity.

The top raffle prize of a holiday package worth around £600 was provided by three times British Travel Award winning lettings agency Coast & Country Cottages (, who market around 400 self catering holiday properties exclusively in stunning South Devon. The prize was kindly donated by Coast & Country Cottages Directors Andrew and Karen Jones, whose youngest daughter Elinor (now 18) spent six weeks on SCBU at Wrexham Maelor. The package included a £500 holiday voucher, plus a Riverford holiday box, a Devonshire Cream Tea, two bottles of Sharpham Wine, and a box of locally made fudge, all to be enjoyed by one lucky winner.

Karen Jones said:

‘We were delighted to donate a holiday voucher for one lucky person to win a holiday for 2017 in beautiful South Devon, plus a selection of treats for the winner to enjoy during their stay. Eighteen years ago our daughter Elinor was born 11 weeks early and spent 6 weeks in Wrexham Maelor SCBU. It is our pleasure to help this wonderful charity with their fundraising.  They and everyone on SCBU made such a difference to our lives, and we are forever grateful’.

Other individuals and companies involved included Simon Hadley of Jaspers Catering in Chester, who provided complimentary food for the party, having had a baby on SCBU himself a few years ago. North Wales Children’s Parties also provided entertainment in the form of a ‘Frozen’ Elsa and Anna routine at a discounted rate.

Ruth Drake, Chairwoman of Cherish, says:

We at Cherish were delighted by the turnout at our Christmas party last week. Not only did we raise valuable funds, but we were able to witness the reunion of many babies who had been in special care with their nurses who had cared for them. We also had wonderful feedback from parents attending who relished the opportunity to meet with other parents who had been on the unit at the same time as them, as they were able to compare stories of how their children have grown and flourished since they were able to go home. Absolutely heartwarming! Perhaps most importantly, the children attending had a wonderful time. We wish to thank Coast & Country Cottages for their generous raffle prize donation which helped make our event so successful.”

The parents support group Cherish was founded in 1987 by a group of people who had babies in need of special care, and holds various events throughout the year. The Christmas party this year raised almost £500 from the sale of raffle tickets, which will go towards new equipment for the SCBU at Wrexham Maelor.
