There are also plenty of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/dartmouth\/dartmouth-cafes\/\">excellent caf\u00e9s in Dartmouth<\/a> where you can build up some stamina, such as Caf\u00e9 Al Fresco, the experts in hearty breakfasts.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively take <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/dartmouth\/dartmouth-castle-guide\/#ferry\">the Dartmouth Castle Ferry<\/a> or park on Castle Road to take around two miles off the walk. Here you can enjoy stunning coastal views, a tasty snack in the Castle Tea Rooms or even enjoy a jaunt around <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/dartmouth\/dartmouth-castle-guide\/\">Dartmouth Castle<\/a> itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Destination:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\">Blackpool Sands<\/a>, at the southern end of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/start-bay-guide\/\">Start Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\">Blue Flag-awarded Blackpool Sands<\/a> is one of South Devon\u2019s most beloved beaches. This privately owned beach is relatively small but bursting with natural beauty and served by excellent facilities. These included a beach shop, a fantastic Venus Caf\u00e9 and Takeaway, toilets and showers, seasonal lifeguards and watersports equipment for hire. <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\">Find out more about Blackpool Sands from our Beach Bible<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"gettingthere\"><\/a>Getting there<\/h2>\n<p>1. From Dartmouth, make your way towards Newcomen Road. Follow this road away from the town.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/1-Newcomen_road-930x577.jpg\" alt=\"Newcomen Road, the first stage of the walk from Dartmouth to Blackpool Sands\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. In around half a mile you\u2019ll come to the hamlet of Warfleet. Turn left down Castle Road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/2-warfleet_2-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"The turning at Warfleet\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. A few hundred yards later, Castle Road divides and you can head in either direction. The lower route will take you via the castle. In our guide, we\u2019ll take the higher route through woodland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/4-castle_road-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"Castle Road\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Follow the road uphill. (Heading down the path pictured on the left will take you to Sugary Cove.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/5-sugary-cove-turning-by-castle-930x575.jpg\" alt=\"The end of Castle Road\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. Continue all the way up the steep hill. At the top, there\u2019s a bench with a wonderful view \u2013 ideal for getting your breath back!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/7-bench-by-little-dartmouth-930x579.jpg\" alt=\"The bench by Compass Cottage\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Pass through the kissing gate, walk along the ridge of the hill and go through that gate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/8-little-dartmouth-kissing-gate-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The kissing gate at Little Dartmouth\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. Walk along the track, which is mostly lined with high hedges. Carry on down the road. Pass Little Dartmouth Car Park. When the road bends right shortly afterwards, take a left (essentially continuing straight on).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/10-little-dartmouth-car-park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Little Dartmouth car park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>9. Carry on down this road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/11-lane-past-little-dartmouth-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Towards Redlap Lane\" \/><\/p>\n<p>10. Have your camera ready! Congratulations, you\u2019ve made it to Stoke Fleming! At the junction, you\u2019ll see the Village Hall over the road to your right. Behind this building are public toilets and a fountain with drinking water.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/12-towards-stoke-fleming-village-hall-930x535.jpg\" alt=\"Stoke Fleming Village Hall\" \/><\/p>\n<p>12. Cross the road and make your way across the park. Exit the park to the left of the boules area.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/13-stoke-fleming-village-green-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Stoke Fleming village green\" \/><\/p>\n<p>13. Turn right out of the gate and follow the road for a hundred yards or so.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/14-turning-past-village-green-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Turn right after leaving the green\" \/><\/p>\n<p>14. Leave the road through the alley to the left. There is a yellow sign indicating the Coast Path.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/14-stoke-fleming-footpath-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"A footpath through Stoke Fleming\" \/><\/p>\n<p>15. Continue straight, heading in the direction of the church.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/15-stoke-fleming-towards-church-930x538.jpg\" alt=\"Head towards the church and the Green Dragon\" \/><\/p>\n<p>16. At the crossroad, carry straight on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/16-straight-on-at-green-dragon-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The crossroads by the Green Dragon in Stoke Fleming\" \/><\/p>\n<p>17. Or\u2026 stop for a drink at the Green Dragon \u2013 it\u2019s practically a rite of passage for hikers on this stretch of the Coast Path!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/17-green-dragon-pub-930x574.jpg\" alt=\"The Green Dragon pub in Stoke Fleming\" \/><\/p>\n<p>18. Make your way down the hill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/18-downhill-towards-A379-930x546.jpg\" alt=\"A view down the hill towards the A379 and Start Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>19. You\u2019ll come to a junction. Carefully cross the A379 and turn right, following the pavement. Don\u2019t forget to stop to admire this wonderful view of Start Bay!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/19-crossing-the-a379-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The A379 above Blackpool Sands\" \/><\/p>\n<p>20. Leave the roadside when the path appears, making your way through the forest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/20-footpath-down-to-blackpool-sands-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The wooded path running along the A379 towards the beach\" \/><\/p>\n<p>21. Don\u2019t think you can manage the walk back? Luckily there\u2019s a bus stop here, so take a look at the timetable on your way past.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/21-bus-stops-at-blackpool-sands-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Bus stops\" \/><\/p>\n<p>22. You\u2019ll come out at the car park by Blackpool Sands. Well done, you\u2019ve made it! Have a bite to eat at the Venus Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/22-blackpool-sands-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Blackpool Sands, with its popular Venus Cafe\" \/><\/p>\n<p>23. Or even take a dip. Lifeguards patrol the beach during peak periods, and there are changing booths and showers at this fantastic Blue Flag-awarded beach.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"gettingback\"><\/a>Getting back<\/h2>\n<p>1. Head back the way you came, crossing the A379. If you\u2019re not quite ready to leave the stunning views behind just yet, there\u2019s a \u2018secret\u2019 bench just to your right after you cross the road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/23-hidden-bench-near-a379-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"A lovely 'hidden' bench above Blackpool Sands\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Back at Little Dartmouth car park, turn right and walk up to the gate at the far end.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/24-right-at-little-dartmouth-car-park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Little Dartmouth car park (National Trust)\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Go through the gate and walk down the hill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/25-gate-past-little-dartmouth-car-park-930x629.jpg\" alt=\"The gate at the end of Little Dartmouth car park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Go through the gate at the bottom. Follow the trail left.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/26-gate-by-hidden-picnic-table-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The gate at the foot of the hill that leads down from Little Dartmouth\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. Or\u2026 carry on straight\/take a slight right to uncover a secluded picnic table \u2013 the perfect place for a pit-stop!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/27-hidden-picnic-table-930x440.jpg\" alt=\"A gloriously secluded picnic table on the Coast Path\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Follow the trail down the hill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/28-past-picnic-table-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Carry on down the hill from\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. If you carry straight on rather than following the trail around to the left, you\u2019ll find another bench with a wonderful coastal view.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/28b-bench-at-the-foot-of-hill-past-little-dartmouth-car-park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"A lovely spot for a rest!\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. Follow the trail out of this field and back uphill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/29-back-up-hill-past-slurry-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"Head back uphill\" \/><\/p>\n<p>9. Continue along the trail, keeping the sea to your right. (Alternatively, you can head uphill and rejoin the track you took on the way.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/30-fork-in-path-towards-dartmouth-930x644.jpg\" alt=\"The lower route home towards Dartmouth\" \/><\/p>\n<p>10. Go through the gate. Take the central path.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/31-gate-before-steep-hill-by-little-dartmouth-930x466.jpg\" alt=\"Go through this gate which leads left to Little Dartmouth and right towards Compass Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>11. When the woodland clears, go down the hill to your right.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/32-downhill-towards-compass-cove-930x642.jpg\" alt=\"Downhill towards Compass Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>12. Why not take a quick detour? Instead of following the trail around to the left, go through the gate and turn right.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/33-gate-leading-to-compass-cove-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"The gate that leads to Compass Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>13. This will take you to Compass Cove, a beautiful secluded beach beloved of locals \u2018in the know\u2019. There are steps all the way down (due care and attention is advised!)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/34-compass-cove-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Compass Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>14. Back on the beaten path, follow the trail along the bottom of the field. Go through the gate at the end.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/35-gate-leading-back-uphill-towards-sugary-cove-930x462.jpg\" alt=\"A gate on the way to Sugary Cove and Dartmouth Castle\" \/><\/p>\n<p>15. Follow the trail uphill. A little way up the hill, look out for a little path leading off to the left. There\u2019s another hidden bench around the corner that\u2019s great for a rest.<\/p>\n<p>NB Take care on this uphill stretch. It is steep, uneven and sometimes slippery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/36-uneven_terrain-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Uneven uphill terrain on the way to Sugary Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>16. When you rejoin the single track road, continue downhill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/37-downill-towards-castle-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Downhill from Compass Cottage\" \/><\/p>\n<p>17. At the foot of the hill, you can either continue straight on towards Warfleet and Dartmouth, or take the steps off to the right. These will take you to Dartmouth Castle, where the Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms offers a range of tasty snacks, meals and drinks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/38-dartmouth-castle-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Dartmouth Castle on a sunny day\" \/><\/p>\n<p>18. Just past the castle, you\u2019ll find the stop for the Dartmouth Castle Ferry \u2013 a good option for those with tired legs!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/39-dartmouth-castle-ferry-930x547.jpg\" alt=\"The entrance to Dartmouth Castle Ferry\" \/><\/p>\n<p>19. Follow the road back to Dartmouth. There are plenty of places to stop on the way, including several benches at Warfleet with lovely views of the creek.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/40-Warfleet-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The view from Warfleet of the creek\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dartmouth makes a wonderful holiday base for walkers.
