Or, for a more manageable option, simply drive to East Soar car park (postcode for sat nav users: TQ7 3DR).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Destination<\/strong>:\u00a0Bolt Head, Starehole Bay<\/p>\n<p>Bolt Head and Starehole Bay offer some of the most magnificent views anywhere in South Devon. Despite being very close to Salcombe, you&#8217;ll experience a sense of seclusion that&#8217;s similar to\u00a0when you&#8217;re exploring deepest Dartmoor.<\/p>\n<p>One of the nice aspects of this walk is that it&#8217;s only moderately strenuous in parts, unless you&#8217;re really keen to head down the steep hills (and of course back up again!) to get nearer to the water, for example at <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/soar-mill-cove\/\">Soar Mill Cove<\/a>. Therefore, overall the walk is suitable for a wide range of walkers. There are also some lovely places to stop for a rest, with benches dotted along the journey at\u00a0some of the most picturesque points.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"there\"><\/a>Setting out<\/h2>\n<p>1.\u00a0From East Soar National Trust car park, return to the road rather than following the trail signs leading out of the back of the car park. Turn left and follow the road for a few hundred yards.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/1.-Out-of-East-Soar-Car-Park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"East Soar Car Park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. You&#8217;ll come to a brick building on your left. Take the right turn opposite.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/2-turn-left-at-brick-building-930x609.jpg\" alt=\"A right turn towards Soar Mill Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Follow the trail, which passes to the left of a farmhouse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/3.-Walk-alongside-the-house-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The House by Soar Mill Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0Go through the gate behind the house and turn left. Go through the next gate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/4-Gate-behind-house-930x592.jpg\" alt=\"The gate behind the farmhouse\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0Take a left and follow the trail alongside the wall. Alternatively, turn right and head to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/soar-mill-cove\/\">Soar Mill Cove<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/5-left-towards-Bolt-Head-930x686.jpg\" alt=\"Sign towards Bolt Head\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0With the water to your right and open fields to your left, it&#8217;s an easy walk to navigate, and you can choose whether to stay on the shortest trail or take detours at various points.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/6-view-towards-Bolt-Head-930x465.jpg\" alt=\"The view towards Bolt Head\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. Go through the gate on your left.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/7-go-through-gate-towards-Bolt-Head-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Gate by Bolt Head\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8. Keep to the trail on the right rather than heading inland for the most breathtaking views.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/8-towards-Bolt-Head-930x576.jpg\" alt=\"The view towards the water\" \/><\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0Follow the well-worn path around the headland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/9-follow-the-track-towards-Bolt-He-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Follow the trail towards Starehole Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>10. Continue to the crest of the hill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/10-follow-the-yellow-arrows-930x612.jpg\" alt=\"Signposted trail\" \/><\/p>\n<p>11. Go through the gate.\u00a0Follow the sign that points right towards Overbecks and Salcombe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/11-sign-by-Starehole-Bay-930x540.jpg\" alt=\"Go through the gate by Starehole Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>12. To your right,\u00a0you&#8217;ll see a steep path downwards. Can you see the bench, placed perfectly to enjoy the scenery? Stay on your current path for an easier walk or\u00a0take the right turn downhill for a more breathtaking (in both senses of the word!) option.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/12-bench-at-foot-of-path-by-Starehole-Bay-930x566.jpg\" alt=\"A bench with stunning views\" \/><\/p>\n<p>13. Let&#8217;s assume you&#8217;ve chosen the more &#8216;efficient&#8217; option, sticking to the higher ground.<\/p>\n<p>At the corner of the field you&#8217;ll see a sign pointing downhill. The steps are uneven so take care.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/13-Downhill-around-Starehole-Bay-930x494.jpg\" alt=\"Head downhill around Starehole Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>14. Make your way back up the hill towards the tor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/14-back-uphill-around-Starehole-Bay-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Time to head back uphill\" \/><\/p>\n<p>15. The sign at the top will help you regain your bearings. Follow the arrow pointing towards Sharp Tor, Overbecks and South Sands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/15-follow-the-sign-towards-Salcombe-and-Oversteps-930x494.jpg\" alt=\"A sign towards the top of the hill by Starehole Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>16. Look behind you! Starehole Bay is a wonderful sight.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/16-view-of-Starehole-Bay-1-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Starehole Bay\" \/><\/p>\n<p>17. Follow the trail. You&#8217;ll come to another perfectly placed bench. This one has stunning views of Salcombe and the Kingsbridge Estuary. Speaking of benches&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/17-bench-with-views-over-the-estuary-towards-Salcombe-930x516.jpg\" alt=\"Bench above Salcombe 1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>18. A little further along, another bench sits above Salcombe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/18-bench-before-RNLI-memorial-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"Bench over Salcombe 2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>19. Carry on past this bench towards the water &#8211; ten yards ahead of it, there&#8217;s another seat with even better views. This is also the site of a memorial which commemorates the 1916 Salcombe lifeboat disaster. It&#8217;s a beautiful spot for quiet contemplation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/19-bench-by-memorial-930x491.jpg\" alt=\"Bench by the Lifeboat Disaster Memorial\" \/><\/p>\n<p>20. Continue on the hedged path.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/20-footpath-towards-Overbecks-930x468.jpg\" alt=\"Path above Overbecks\" \/><\/p>\n<p>21.\u00a0The trail gives way to steps downhill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/21-steps-downhill-towards-Overbecks-and-South-Sands-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"A stepped path will take you downhill.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>22. At the foot of the steps, you&#8217;ll come to a sign. Take a right if you&#8217;d like to go to Overbecks, South Sands or even Salcombe. Take a left to make your way back to East Soar car park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/22-sign-indicating-the-way-back-to-East-Soar-car-park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Sign to East Soar Car Park, Overbecks, etc.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"back\"><\/a>Getting back<\/h2>\n<p>1.\u00a0Follow the path lined with trees. Farmland will soon appear in front of you.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/23-follow-the-trail-uphill-towasrds-East-Soar-car-park-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Forest path\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0Make your way along the trail through the field. The windsocks ahead are useful landmarks &#8211; walk towards them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/24-walk-towards-the-windsocks-by-East-Soar-car-park-930x654.jpg\" alt=\"Windsocks by East Soar\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0Exit through the gate and follow the sign left towards East Soar car park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/25-gate-by-lane-back-to-the-car-park-930x623.jpg\" alt=\"Exit the field by East Soar car park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4.
