In episode four, Paul visited South Devon, setting out from Plymouth, so our locally based team took an especially eager interest.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s some further information about the filming locations for episode four of Coastal Path.<\/p>\n<h2>Burgh Island<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/burgh-island-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The land bridge to Burgh Island, as featured as a filming location on the BBC's Coastal Path programme\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>Paul walked from Noss Mayo to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/bigbury-on-sea-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Bigbury-On-Sea<\/a>, where the views of Burgh Island across the land bridge are truly spectacular. He took the famous sea tractor across the sand to the island, famous for its 1930s Art Deco hotel. While most visitors go to the Pilchard Inn for a drink, traverse the island to enjoy its special views or dine in the exclusive hotel, Paul chose to explore underwater instead, joining a marine biologist for a snorkelling tour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given Burgh Island\u2019s significance for the life and work of Agatha Christie as well as its natural beauty, it\u2019s no surprise that it was chosen as one of the filming locations for Coastal Path.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"in-copy-button\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/burgh-island-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">You can find out more about Burgh Island here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Thurlestone Sands<\/h2>\n<p>From Burgh Island, Paul headed east. Dramatic footage of the Coast Path at <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/thurlestone-beach-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Thurlestone Sands<\/a> during the February 2014 storm was shown, and Esther Pearson from the South West Coast Path Association explained to Paul how the path was slightly rerouted, thanks to generous accommodations made by Thurlestone Golf Club.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/thurlestone-rock-from-the-beach-930x571.jpg\" alt=\"Thurlestone Rock\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paul and Esther sat outside the Beachhouse caf\u00e9 at <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/south-milton-sands-beach-bible\/\">South Milton Sands<\/a>, enjoying views of Thurlestone Rock, an arch-shaped rock formation just offshore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/thurlestone-rock-from-the-beachhouse-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Thurlestone Rock, viewed from South Milton Sands\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<h2>Hope Cove to Start Point<\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"callout\"><p>The programme skipped several more beauty spots on this length of coastline, from <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/hope-cove-beaches-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">the two beaches at Hope Cove<\/a> to the rugged beauty of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/prawle-point-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Prawle Point<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/lannacombe-beach-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Lannacombe Beach<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/mattiscombe-beach\/\">Mattiscombe Sand<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/Hope-Cove-7-930x585.jpg\" alt=\"Hope Cove\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This episode of Coastal Path then picked up just outside <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/start-bay-guide\/#startpoint\">Start Point<\/a>, where Paul met Jason McKinlay, an athlete and adventurer who runs the trails around this challenging seaside spot. Like Burgh Island, Start Point Lighthouse simply had to be chosen as a filming location for Coast Path, given its iconic status in the region.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/Coastal-path-looking-towards-the-Start-Point-Lighthouse-930x698.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<h2>A quick look at Start Bay<\/h2>\n<p>The programme touched briefly on <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/start-bay-guide\/\">Start Bay<\/a>, the stunning stretch of coastline between Start Point and <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\">Blackpool Sands<\/a>, before picking up at Kingswear, which faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/dartmouth\/\">Dartmouth <\/a>across the Dart Estuary.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/start-bay-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"Start Bay from the north\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>With no broadcasting schedules to restrict you when you visit South Devon, we suggest making at least a few stops along Start Bay during your break, getting to know some of its sites of natural and historic interest. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>village ruins at <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/hallsands-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Hallsands<\/a><\/li>\n<li>an Operation Tiger memorial at <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/slapton-sands-south-devon-beach-bible\/\">Torcross (Slapton Sands)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve<\/li>\n<li>a wide range of fine shingle beaches, including Blue Flag-awarded <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\">Blackpool Sands<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"in-copy-button\" href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/start-bay-guide\/\">Find out more from our Start Bay guide.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<h2>Kingswear<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/dartmouth_kingswear_5-930x437.jpg\" alt=\"Kingswear, seen from Dartmouth\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At Kingswear, Paul climbed aboard the Dartmouth Steam Railway, where he assisted the driver as the train chugged out of the station and headed along the northern bank of the River Dart towards Paignton.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/steam-train-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"The steam train entering Kingswear\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Dartmouth Steam Railway is one of two such vintage railway attractions, the other running between Totnes and Buckfastleigh via Staverton. Both provide spectacular views of the South Devon countryside, taking in woodland and riverside scenery.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<h2>The perfect holiday destination for walkers<\/h2>\n<p>Why not choose South Devon as the base for your next walking holiday?
