This fortress showcases South Devon’s rich maritime history and its strategic importance. Dartmouth’s thriving commercial port, dating back to the 12th century, required protection during the Hundred Years War (1336) and as such, construction of Dartmouth Castle began in 1388 under Mayor John Hawley, following King Richard II’s orders. Over the centuries it expanded to include a Gun Tower and bulwark, with the nearby Kingswear Castle completed in 1502.

Dartmouth Castle is the perfect place to visit for history enthusiasts and families, and best of all, its stunning coastal location provides breathtaking views of the Dart Estuary. It’s a highlight among the castles in Devon’s southern region! Situated right on the coast path, be sure to try one of the popular Dartmouth walks after your castle visit. Kingswear Castle

Standing proud at the mouth of the River Dart, Kingswear Castle is a well-preserved Tudor artillery fort that was initially built to defend Dartmouth harbour. This distinctive coastal fortification boasts incredible views across the estuary, and is an iconic feature to those entering the harbour.

Working in partnership with Dartmouth Castle (situated opposite), Kingswear Castle was originally constructed in 1491 during Henry VII’s reign. This historic fort features thick stone walls and gunports that were designed to protect the strategic harbour entrance. Today, Kingswear Castle is managed by the Landmark Trust and is a popular place to visit year-round.

3. Totnes Castle

Totnes Castle, another gem amongst South Devon’s castles, dominates the town’s skyline from its man-made mound at the top of historic Fore Street.

This classic motte and bailey castle, initially built in the 13th century first began as an earthwork and timber structure before being fortified with stone. Totnes Castle offers one of the most impressive panoramas in South Devon with views that overlook the mediaeval town of Totnes and the winding River Dart. This atmospheric coastal stronghold takes in dramatic views across the estuary. Originally built in the 1540s during Henry VIII’s reign, the castle was extensively fortified during the Civil War.
