South Devon\u2019s villages, along with our unspoilt coastline and the natural beauty of our countryside, play a large part in making our region special.<\/p>\n

Some of these, like Loddiswell <\/a>and Stoke Fleming<\/a> for example, make excellent starting points for coastal or inland walks.\u00a0Others, including Dittisham<\/a>, East Allington and South Pool<\/a>, are home to cosy traditional pubs, serving homemade food that pulls in visitors from all over the region.<\/p>\n

Several South Devon villages also have fascinating histories to tell, such as Dartington <\/a>\u2013 home to the Elmhirsts\u2019 world-famous \u201cDartington experiment\u201d \u2013 and Hallsands<\/a>, the lower part of which was lost to the sea after a great storm in 1917.<\/p>\n

Blackawton<\/h3>\n

Blackawton is a peaceful rural village close to Dartmouth and Start Bay\u2019s northernmost beaches.<\/p>\n

Chillington<\/h3>\n

On the scenic coastal road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, Chillington is a thriving village within easy reach of Torcross Beach and the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dartington<\/a><\/h3>\n

Home to the picturesque, historic Dartington Hall Estate,<\/a> Dartington is a magnet for artists from around the world.<\/p>\n

Dittisham<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"Dittisham,<\/a><\/p>\n

Situated on the bank of the River Dart across from the Greenway Estate<\/a>, beautiful Dittisham <\/a>is home to an Anchorstone Caf\u00e9 and the Ferry Boat Inn.<\/p>\n

East Allington<\/h3>\n

The quiet village of East Allington, deep in the South Hams countryside, is where you\u2019ll find the excellent Fortescue Arms pub.<\/p>\n

Frogmore<\/h3>\n

This pretty settlement sits at Frogmore Creek on the Kingsbridge Estuary, and is home to the much-loved @The Bakery.<\/p>\n

Loddiswell<\/h3>\n

Right on Loddiswell\u2019s <\/a>doorstep, you\u2019ll find a wonderful woodland walk along the old railway line<\/a>, the Avon Mill Garden Centre<\/a>, the South Devon Chilli Farm and Valley View Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Malborough<\/h3>\n

Malborough offers lovely circular walks taking in coastline and countryside, easy access to Salcombe and a couple of popular community pubs.<\/p>\n

South Pool<\/a><\/h3>\n

South Pool Creek, and indeed the village itself, is a pleasantly tranquil beauty spot deep in the South Hams countryside. South Pool<\/a> is also home to the Millbrook Inn, a tiny but highly renowned gastro-pub.<\/p>\n

Stokenham<\/a><\/h3>\n

With a couple of nice pubs, a walking trail to Start Bay and pretty, leafy surroundings, Stokenham <\/a>offers a scenic place to stop on the coastal road from Kingsbridge.<\/p>\n

Stoke Fleming<\/a><\/h3>\n

A waypoint on the South West Coast Path between Dartmouth and Blackpool Sands<\/a>, Stoke Fleming provides stunning coastal views and a pub to refuel thirsty hikers.<\/p>\n

Strete<\/a><\/h3>\n

Strete<\/a>, a small coastal village above Slapton Sands<\/a>, is home to the excellent Laughing Monk restaurant, whose reputation is amongst the best in South Devon.<\/p>\n

Torcross<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"Torcross,<\/a><\/p>\n

Torcross <\/a>sits at the southern edge of Slapton Sands<\/a>, where you\u2019ll find the Start Bay Inn, two caf\u00e9s, a memorial to the fallen and the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n
