Linked by a tidal land bridge to the mainland, the island is perhaps most famous as the inspiration for Agatha Christie\u2019s \u2018And then there were none\u2019, said to be the world\u2019s bestselling mystery novel of all time. It\u2019s no wonder so many people flock to these famous beaches, whether that\u2019s to sunbathe, swim, surf or simply see the iconic sight of Burgh Island and its iconic Art Deco hotel.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, comparatively few people seem to explore the more remote stretches and coves to the west of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/bigbury-on-sea-holiday-cottages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bigbury-On-Sea<\/a>, such as the beauty spots of Westcombe Beach and <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/ayrmer-cove-south-devon-beach-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ayrmer Cove<\/a>. A few steps up towards the village, you\u2019ll find the 14th century Sloop Inn, another nice place to stop for a bite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/12\/Gastrobus-930x409.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"409\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/bantham-holiday-cottages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bantham Beach<\/a>, you\u2019ll hug the coastline on a hilly trail along <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/thurlestone-holiday-homes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thurlestone Bay<\/a>, great for those who love to stay in sight of the glistening sea. Two and a half miles of rugged coastline later, you\u2019ll come to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/soar-mill-cove\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Soar Mill Cove<\/a>, a much-loved local beauty spot. The beach itself is right next to the path, making a quick rest at the water\u2019s edge all but irresistible.<\/p>\n<p>Continue for two more miles to reach Bolt Head and <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/walks\/salcombe-walks-east-soar-circular\/\">Starehole Bay<\/a>, where the views are simply stunning.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/16-view-of-Starehole-Bay-1-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"618\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>This marks the opening of the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary. Along this section you\u2019ll find some lovely elevated views of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/salcombe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Salcombe<\/a>. Look out for picnic benches slightly off the beaten path route on this section, but watch your footing at all times as there are many sheer drops.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/11\/17-bench-with-views-over-the-estuary-towards-Salcombe-930x516.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"516\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>Next stop is South Sands, a little further along the estuary. This is a great beach for swimming and watersports, with shallow, calm waters, equipment hire on site, and Bo\u2019s Beach Caf\u00e9 (seasonal).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/03\/South-Sands-Beach-Cafe.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"900\" height=\"561\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>Less than half a mile further you\u2019ll reach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/north-sands-salcombe-south-devon-beach-bible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Sands<\/a>, a similar beach that benefits from the fantastic <a href=\"http:\/\/winkingprawngroup.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Winking Prawn<\/a> caf\u00e9-restaurant, located just a stone\u2019s throw from the sand.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/09\/the-winking-prawn-930x620.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>Enjoy special views of Fort Charles, the estuary and the beaches of Sunny Cove, Fisherman\u2019s Cove and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/east-portlemouth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Portlemouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/04\/Fort-Charles-North-Sands.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"897\" height=\"596\" \/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"fancy-divider\" \/>\n<p>Above North Sands is the National Trust-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/overbecks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Overbeck\u2019s House<\/a>, home to a fascinating collection of art and artefacts that was once owned by the scientist and inventor, Otto Overbeck.<\/p>\n<p>In 10 minutes or so you\u2019ll be in Salcombe. There\u2019s a privately-owned car park close by, from which you can walk steeply downhill towards Start Point or <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/mattiscombe-beach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mattiscombe Sands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/05\/mattiscombe_beach_resized-930x620.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Walking from Start Point to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/torcross-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torcross<\/a> will take you along two popular South Devon beaches. <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/hallsands-south-devon-beach-bible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Historic Hallsands<\/a> is a little cove, which is famous for sitting alongside the ruined village of South Hallsands.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/06\/beesands-walk-12-south-hallsands-930x570.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A short, signposted detour leads to a viewing platform over the old village. For a five-mile circular walk, lots of people head to Strete Gate on one side and then return on the other, giving you a nice mix of greenery and coastal views in a compact area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2013\/04\/Torcross-Beachboat-shot-TR-930x620.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Being very flat, this is a great option when you need a break from the region\u2019s hillier, more challenging trails.<\/p>\n<p>The trail takes you a little inland on the way to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/blackpool-sands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blackpool Sands<\/a>, a Blue Flag-awarded fine shingle cove towards the north of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/beaches\/start-bay-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Start Bay<\/a>. Blackpool Sands is one of the most popular beaches in South Devon and it\u2019s not hard to see why: first-rate facilities from showers to watersports equipment hire, a fantastic Venus Caf\u00e9 and Takeaway, and special views.<\/p>\n<p>Walk uphill and cross the A379 to head up to <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/south-devon\/stoke-fleming-village-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stoke Fleming<\/a>, a vibrant working village perched high above Start Bay. It\u2019s a classic local walk, repeated by residents often on Sundays when they can combine the hike with a traditional roast at the Green Dragon pub in Stoke Fleming.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2016\/09\/start-bay-930x618.jpg\" alt=\"South west coast path walks\" width=\"930\" height=\"618\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Dartmouth nears, you\u2019ll pass a couple of isolated beaches.
