At dusk the surfers drift in over the waves back to the shoreline. My wife and I often stop for a bite at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Venus Caf\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> right by the beach, but there are some nice picnic spots on the way too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our favourite is just a few steps off the beaten track, but it\u2019s so tucked away that lots of people miss it. You\u2019ll find this spot about 500m down the hill from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/little-dartmouth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Dartmouth National Trust<\/a> car park on Redlap Road. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and porpoises which are often seen in this area!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"salcombe\"><\/a>3. At one end of the car park there is a raised picnic area with a table and views over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/exploring-the-salcombe-estuary-from-the-water\">Salcombe Estuary<\/a> and harbour. Or take a short circular walk through the rolling fields past a small shingle beach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the circular loop back, some incredible views begin to unveil of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/salcombe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salcombe<\/a> and its estuary. This is where I like to settle down with my picnic blanket and watch the hustle and bustle of life on the estuary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s often a blaze of colour from sailing boats and paddle boarders making their way about the estuary and its narrow creeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"millbay\"><\/a>4. Mill Bay<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAT NAV users: TQ8 8PU for Mill Bay car park<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33232\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/East-Portlemouth-picnic-spot-1.jpg\" alt=\"East portlemouth beach and estuary with moored boats.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like to walk across the wide stretch of beach at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/east-portlemouth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Portlemouth<\/a> and through woodland paths that reveal charming quiet sandy coves, Smalls and Mill Bay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mill Bay is the larger of the two coves where I can grab a nice ice cream from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovingthebeach.co.uk\/east-portlemouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Portlemouth Venus Caf\u00e9<\/a> on route. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is usually followed by a picnic with the kids and Jumbles the dog on Mill Bay beach. Tucked behind trees and woodland makes it feel as though you\u2019re on a deserted island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"starehole\"><\/a>5. Starehole Bay<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SAT NAV users: TQ8 8LH for South Sands car park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/Starehole-Bay.jpg\" alt=\"A view of starehole bay from the cliff tops with boat in water.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnly accessible by foot, this breathtaking view is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/salcombe-walks-2#Salcombe%20to%20Bolt%20Head%20walk\">Sharp Tor and Bolt Head walk<\/a>, which runs along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South West Coast Path<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revealing a tropical paradise of palms and banana trees leading to the flourishing wilderness, it&#8217;s home to wild ponies and has various picnic benches along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although Starehole Bay is off the beaten track, it is popular with walkers and boaters alike for its views of the clear turquoise waters. It\u2019s the perfect place to sit and take in the sea air.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"woodleigh\"><\/a>6. You can spot horse shoe imprints, rare plants and wildlife here too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually set up a picnic opposite the vivid cornfields, taking in the views of the rolling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/devon-cottages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Devon<\/a> countryside as I eat. After a lovely lunch in the open air, I always like to visit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.avonmill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avon Mill Garden Centre<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to look at their coastal plants and enjoy the home-made scones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"milton\"><\/a>7. South Milton Sands<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAT NAV users: TQ7 3JY for South Milton car park<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/09\/South-Milton-Sands-sunset-picnic.jpg\" alt=\"south milton sands at sunset - one of the best picnic spots in devon.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHands down one of the picnic best spots in South Devon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The large sandy beach looks out over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/thurlestone-holiday-homes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thurlestone<\/a> Rock, it is the perfect place to lay down the picnic rug, and you can always find a private spot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, for something a little more formal, there are several National Trust picnic benches adjacent to the popular <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/beachhousedevon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beachhouse Caf\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overlooking the beach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love to treat ourselves, and top up our picnic with hot chips from the takeaway, later finishing with an ice-cream! The footpath itself is sandwiched between the River Dart and the South Devon Railway track, and slowly meanders through the woods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a magical spot, where wildlife is rife, with an array of birds, butterflies and dragonflies. We often spot kingfishers and herons, and once, a young otter swam beneath our feet! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many secluded river beaches perfect for residing. And some great swimming holes, which are popular amongst the local wild swimming community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"dittisham\"><\/a>9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/dittisham.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dittisham<\/a><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAT NAV users: The Hams Car Park TQ9 0HS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis small but perfectly formed South Devon village flanks the River Dart and has everything you need to enjoy a long, lazy day picnicking by the riverside. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an expansive village green, known as \u2018the ham\u2019, a play area situated on the waters edge, shallow waters for paddling, and a pontoon for crabbing (also a great jumping spot for those who will brave it!).
