What started in 2003 as a back garden hobby has grown and blossomed into a company whose goods are sold across the country. We soon realised there was a widespread growing fascination with chillies across the UK.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"business\"><\/a><strong>How did the business grow so rapidly?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Around the time we started, organic food and \u201cbuying local\u201d were movements growing in popularity. We were able to offer products made without artificial additives, made in small batches to retain a home cooked flavour. All produced locally, with low food miles.<\/p>\n<p>We were lucky to find local polytunnels to rent and a few years later, another local farmer supported us by agreeing to sell us 10 acres of farmland. We built our own polytunnels, a production kitchen and storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>We are very proud that our products are now available across the UK and Europe, stocked in over 600 farm shops and delis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/how-to\/find-a-stockist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to find your nearest stockist.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"farm\"><\/a><strong>What sets South Devon Chilli Farm apart from other chilli producers in the UK?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As producers who do everything, \u201cfrom seed to sauce,\u201d we like to think we are \u201cthe original and best!\u201d We have managed to increase our production but maintain the natural flavour of our products and we still cook in small batches.<\/p>\n<p>We have always maintained our focus on the flavour of the chilli, rather than the heat, and we have refrained from using chilli extracts.<\/p>\n<p>The South Devon Chilli Farm is normally open all year round but at present it is closed to the public. The show tunnel looks stunning in the summer, boasting the largest collection of chilli plants on display in the UK.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"chilli\"><\/a><strong>What is a chilli\u2019s life cycle, from seed to tasty product?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/South-Devon-Chilli-Farm-home-grown-chillies.jpg\" alt=\"South Devon Chilli Farm - home grown chillies\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We sow seeds each year in February. The plants are then nurtured until they are ready to go into the ground in the polytunnels, around April\/May.<\/p>\n<p>We then pick chilli fruits from May to November. The chillies are stored by freezing, drying, pickling, or cooking straight into products.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"chocolate\"><\/a><strong>Your chilli chocolate is particularly famous. Do you make the chocolate on site?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, our chilli chocolate is very popular. It has a lovely warming heat and an unusual but delicious combination of flavours.<\/p>\n<p>Here at South Devon Chilli Farm, we make all our chocolate on-site. We buy in high quality Belgian chocolate buttons, which we melt and temper. We then add a little of our secret chilli mixture and any extra ingredients such as orange oil or honeycomb pieces.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"originate\"><\/a><strong>Was chilli chocolate an existing chocolate variation? Where did it originate from?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We love Mexican food and had read about the Aztecs use of chillies and chocolate. So thought we would try our own variation. We also borrowed the idea for Chilli Drinking Chocolate from the Aztecs to make a delicious warming drink.<\/p>\n<p>We will try adding chilli to most things! You never know, most things can be pepped up with a little chilli heat.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"products\"><\/a><strong>What are your best-selling products?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/Three-Chilli-Preserve-Gift.png\" alt=\"Chilli Jam Gift Set\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/online-shop\/chilli-preserves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chilli jam<\/a> is one of our best-sellers, not too hot but quite addictive. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/online-shop\/chilli-chocolate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chilli chocolates<\/a> are also a big favourite as well as our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/online-shop\/chilli-sauces\/hot-habanero-chilli-ketchup-280g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hot Habanero Sauce<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as our customers get to love the chilli \u2018hit\u2019 our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/online-shop\/extreme-heat-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extreme range<\/a> is becoming more popular.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"grow\"><\/a><strong>If someone wanted to grow some chillies at home, is it straightforward? Can you offer any hints?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Chillies are pretty easy to grow at home. You must keep them warm and not over water them (they don\u2019t like sitting in water).<\/p>\n<p>On our online shop we sell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk\/online-shop\/chilli-growing-equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing kits<\/a> that provide you with everything you need to get growing!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"climate\"><\/a><strong>Is the South Devon climate conducive to chilli growing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We have found the South Devon climate great for chillies. However, they still prefer to be in a polytunnel or greenhouse to protect them from wind and rain, giving them a little extra warmth.<\/p>\n<p>The winter frosts tend to kill off the plants, which is why we sow fresh seeds each year.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"recommendations\"><\/a><strong>What would be your recommendations for things to do when holidaying in South Devon?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32566\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/Bantham-1.jpg\" alt=\"Bantham\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are many lovely beaches on the South Devon coast \u2013 our favourites are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/bantham-beach-south-devon-beach-bible\">Bantham<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/bigbury-on-sea-south-devon-beach-bible\">Bigbury-on-sea<\/a>. For the thrill-seekers you could try your hand at sailing on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastandcountry.co.uk\/blog\/enjoy-the-salcombe-kingsbridge-estuary\">Salcombe estuary<\/a> or try a variety of other water sports.<\/p>\n<p>If you are into foodie things, then <a href=\"https:\/\/sharpham.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sharpham Vineyard<\/a> is a great place to visit for cheese and wine tasting.
