Beaches
Let’s start with some of the beaches that form the backdrop of many scenes in #YourSouthDevon.
Bat and ball games at South Sands
South Sands is an unspoilt cove just a short walk from Salcombe – it’s the perfect spot for a day at the beach, followed by something to eat at the nearby Winking Prawn restaurant. You can reach South Sands on foot from Salcombe (around fifteen minutes) or take the popular South Sands Ferry.
The Sea Tractor
Visitors access the South Sands Ferry from the Sea Tractor, pictured below.
Bigbury-On-Sea
Bigbury-On-Sea’s stunning beach, famed for its surfing waves as well as the tidal land bridge that links it to Burgh Island, made an unmissable location for our video.
Bigbury ball games
This part of South Devon offers plenty of expansive beaches from Hope Cove to Challaborough – lots of room for kickabout.
North Sands
North Sands, less than a mile south of the centre of Salcombe, is ideal for picnics…
… and pooches!
Sandcastles at East Portlemouth beach
There’s a nice mix of fine shingle and sandy beaches in South Devon, each with their own advantages. Sandy East Portlemouth, a stunning series of beaches you can access by passenger ferry from Salcombe, is perfect for building magnificent sandcastles, not to mention sunbathing, swimming and all your favourite seaside activities.

The Bake House
Every year, the Bake House in Salcombe quickly becomes a favourite amongst newcomers to Salcombe, just as it remains a first port-of-call for those who return to the area over and over again.
Sharpham Wine and Cheese Dairy
Sharpham Vineyard, on the south-facing slopes of the Dart Valley near Totnes, has a well-deserved reputation for excellence in creating deliciously fruity wines.
Their creamy cheeses are equally renowned!
Salcombe Dairy ice cream
With so many flavours on offer, you’ll need to try an awful lot of Salcombe Dairy ice cream before you can be completely sure which is the best – it’s all in the name of research, of course…
Roly’s Fudge
Roly’s Fudge, winners of our Best South Devon Fudge Award (based on a blind test), simply had to be included in our video.
Cranch’s Sweet Shop
While we’re on the subject of sweet treats, we’re big fans of Cranch’s traditional sweet shop, which you’ll find on Fore Street in Salcombe.
Pizza from the Pickwick Inn
The Pickwick Inn near Bigbury is an ever-popular foodie pub which serves top-notch pizzas… like this one.
Afternoon tea at Buckland Tout-Saints
Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel is a popular choice for indulgent traditional afternoon and cream teas. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it’s well worth a visit.
Activities
From gentle walks on the South West Coast Path to surfing the waves off Bantham and Bigbury-On-Sea, our #YourSouthDevon video shows some of the activities for all to enjoy.
Woodlands
Toboggan rides are always irresistible for kids. We visited Woodlands Family Theme Park, just a few miles from Dartmouth, to capture some of the fun.
Paddleboarding at South Milton Sands
South Milton Sands is a popular beach for walkers, sunbathers and watersports enthusiasts alike. This stand-up paddleboard was hired from Triocean Surf.
Bodyboards at South Sands
With Sea Kayak Salcombe on hand, there’s plenty of watersports equipment for hire, including these bodyboards.
Discovery Surf School at Bigbury-On-Sea
Yet another reason to love Bigbury-On-Sea – it’s home to Discovery Surf School and their team of expert instructors.
Kayaking at Blackpool Sands
Stunning Blackpool sands, an unspoilt cove of fine shingle at the northern tip of Start Bay near Dartmouth, offers kayaks for hire (seasonally).
Heading onto the Coast Path at Hope Cove
As well as being a hugely attractive destination in its own right, Hope Cove is also the ideal starting point for a range of coastal walks.
Pennywell
There’s lots for little ones to enjoy at Pennywell Farm, a perfectly-sized attraction for young families, with generous supply of adorable animals to pet and play with…
…plus lots more to occupy the kids, such as a play area with a maze and an indoor soft play centre.

A round of golf at Thurlestone Golf Club involves stunning coastal views.
A rib ride off Salcombe
