“Location is great, Coast and Country are great, but the house is seriously let down by the damp issue downstairs.
There is a dehumidifier provided, but I don't like leaving electrical items like that running when I am not in a house, and after being out for a day the house had a terrible damp smell once you went downstairs.
Running the dehumidifier was pulling over a litre of water an hour out of the air.
any clothes not in the wardrobe or suitcases ended up smelling of damp. Anything left on the floor was damp.
There is no window in the 2nd bedroom and the air in here is heavy and damp.
Its a shame as the house is to a reasonable standard and if it wasnt for the damp issues I would stay again, although the front door looks like an internal glass door with a latch on it, which is quite poor and made my wife feel uncomfortable.

If these were sorted I would not hesitate to staying there again, the location is fantastic.”

Coast & Country Cottages' reply:

Many thanks for your valuable feedback, we were sorry and disappointed to read your comments. The dehumidifier is in the bedroom for use only when the property is unoccupied for any period of a few days or more to prevent the build-up of damp, it would not normally be used when tenants are in occupation due to drawing too much moisture created by the property being used and we are sorry that it was left out for your arrival. Unfortunately it had tripped out in the couple of weeks leading up to your booking hence the damp smell and slight mould on the walls. Following you departure the affected areas were treated and redecorated. Due to the nature/location of these basement type rooms it is very difficult to control damp and moisture build up other than regular decoration and the use of dehumidifiers. We will work closely with the owner to look into any other options that may help the situation. On a brighter note, we were pleased to hear that you loved the location of this property and do hope that you had an enjoyable time exploring Salcombe and all this town has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future.

“Ok for an off-season rental, but concerned that separately occupied dwellings alongside, and also above, would make it noisy. Joint street door with no.14 is noisy to operate, and would be heard every time it was used.

Second bedroom a bit claustrophobic with no fresh air.

Bathroom very nice, especially with underfloor heating.”

Coast & Country Cottages' reply:

Many thanks for your review in respect of your recent stay at 14a Courtenay Street.  Your comments regarding the joint street door have been forwarded to our Property Services team to investigate.  Thanks again for your valuable feedback; we hope to welcome you to Salcombe again.

“We visited with our twentysomething daughters for a week in August. Located in a peaceful side street, slap bang in the middle of Salcombe. A brilliantly equiped home from home with fab views from the decking across the estuary - 1 min walk from Fore Street and all the pubs, restaurants, shops and coastal amenities.
The only downside was that the bedrooms were downstairs and the twin room in particular had a noticeably dank feel. A humidifier was available which did need to be used constantly.
A great holiday break even so, where we soaked up the atmosphere of Salcombe, relaxed and laughed a lot....!”

“Very well equipped cottage. Very comfortable and easy to live in. Lovely decking area. A few minor problems. Rubbish in Salcombe separated into categorise, there were no instructions and only one colour bag available when three were needed and info about facilities such as bottle banks would have been helpful. Delightful patio area but very overlooked by neighbours on higher street and flat overhead and very near next door's decking area.”

“Has a problem with damp even in summer we emptied the dehumidifer twice
during our one week stay.. Our son could not sleep in front bedroom so
my husband and i had to share a twin room.
The property is rather shabby and not up to your normal standard”

Coast & Country Cottages' reply:

With reference to your recent feedback may I firstly say how sorry I am that the property did not meet your expectations. This is a very popular property, in central Salcombe, which has been let consistently for a numbers of seasons and has many returning customers'. 14a Courtenay Street has been assessed as 3 Star Gold however, we will review the standard of accommodation at the earliest opportunity and will discuss the issues you have raised with the property owners. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you wish to discuss these matters further.
