Whether your children are super-sporty, want to relax or are looking to explore whilst on holiday, Dartmouth has an abundance of activities for kids to enjoy, no matter how they want to enjoy their stay. From adrenaline-pumping theme-park rides to sedate river cruises for all the family, everyone will find something along the River Dart to create ever-lasting memories of their stay in this beautiful coastal town.
If you have to think of one past-time that evokes precious memories of past holidays by the seaside and an activity for kids that’s suitable for those young and those older (but still young at heart), it would have to be the traditional family-favourite of crabbing. There are a number of excellent spots in the town with the South Embankment coming out on top with both locals and holiday-makers alike; however, you do have to be quick as this can get busy with crabbers during the holidays. Why not avoid the crowds by taking your bucket and bait down to the water later in the evening to catch as many as possible?
After all of the fun and games by the riverside tick off another from your activities for kids ‘bucket list’ by treating the children to some great British fish and chips. Rockfish aims to sustainably source fresh fish and use local seafood, providing a great tasting dinner that also does good too. Another fantastic feature is that, with adult fish and chips, you are entitled to unlimited chips, enough to keep the whole family full. Children are made very welcome with their own menu and are given the opportunity to draw on the specially created tablecloth!
This award-winning restaurant is only a short, flat stroll away from the stunning Dart Marina apartments overlooking the river, providing the perfect location for both relaxing and access to the town’s restaurants and activities for kids as well as adults. 3 Dart Marina is a luxury 2 storey townhouse boasting a spacious sun terrace with views towards the River Dart; from your window you can spot the passing boats and trains all day long. Use of the Dart Marina Health-Spa facilities is included, with children being able to use the pool at certain times of day. Providing activities for kids, even on a rainy day.
If you’re looking to find activities for kids to suit all weather eventualities, Woodlands provides what you need. The largest family theme park in Devon, Woodlands contains facilities for children and adults of all ages- adults do have to accompany kids on a handful of rides, depending on the age of the children. The indoor play barn has specific soft play sections for smaller children but also includes more ‘extreme’ rides for thrill-seeking youngsters. For fairer weather activities for kids, the outdoor water slides offer a cool-down from the sun and the Zoo Farm allows children to come up close to a wide variety of small animals.
For families eager to get out and about on the water, there are many ways to explore the River Dart. Whether you’re an accomplished seaman or a complete novice, sailing offers a great way to discover the delights of Dartmouth whilst being a perfect activity for kids. Dartmouth Yacht Club runs courses from RYA Stage 1, requiring no experience but a minimum age of 8. This provides action-packed, informative entertainment that’s great for a family with older or teenage children.
Alternatively, you can visit Dartmouth Castle to learn about the historic significance of the pair (alongside Kingswear Castle) of fortresses guarding the mouth of the River Dart. Having been an imposing sight to incoming ships since 1388, the castle still plays a big part in the town, putting on a great range of events and activities for kids. For example, next month sees Pirates At Dartmouth Castle, bringing history to life every Monday and Tuesday during August with the showcasing of deadly weapons and the telling of fantastical tales, overlooking the water. About Tide, with views over Warfleet Creek from the outside seating area, is a luxury property situated near the castle and a short stroll away from the town’s shops, galleries and restaurants. This modern property is great for families, sleeping 6, including those with small children as it’s baby-friendly. A quick drive from local beaches, such as Blackpool Sands and Torcross, activities for kids such as paddling and sandcastle building are easily accessible.
No matter what the age or interests of your children, there is an abundance of activities for kids in and around Dartmouth for them, and for you, to make the most of your stay.
