The ultimate springboard to Christmas, Candlelit Dartmouth is a much loved weekend long community event – one that is firmly anchored by pageantry, magic and sparkle. By day, you will find the cobbled streets of Dartmouth jam packed with entertainers, festive activities and live music, and by dusk, the town is transformed into a winter wonderland…
Highlights over the weekend include the ceremonial switching on of the Christmas lights whilst a choir and musicians lead carols around the Christmas tree, a spectacular procession with hundreds of beautiful hand-made paper lanterns, and the arrival of the big man himself, by boat! Be sure to watch and wave as Father Christmas’ illuminated vessel glides silently through the moonlit waters of the River Dart.
Throughout this magical weekend, visitors can also enjoy a variety of market stalls in and around Royal Avenue Gardens and along The Quay, a crafters market offering an eclectic choice of beautiful handcrafted gifts, and even a ‘Best Dressed Christmas Dog Competition’ – the town positively pulses with excitement throughout this exciting weekend! What’s more, many of Dartmouth’s delightful shops also offer late night shopping – be sure to visit George Street and picturesque Foss Street where you’ll find a great selection of independent shops, and an array of locally made gifts and produce that this thriving harbour town has to offer.
