Stand-Up Paddleboarding (or SUP for short) is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and USA.
Deriving from surfing, Stand-Up Paddleboarding originates from Hawaii but is very popular in South Devon, with many locals and with those who come down to the area on holiday.
Whether looking for an activity for all the family, as a couple, or with friends, Stand-Up Paddleboarding is accessible for all. This exciting sport isn’t just reserved for the most active amongst us but can be a relaxing way to spend the evening or as a fun day out.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding can be enjoyed at sea and on the estuary – though for those who are not as keen on getting wet, the estuary is definitely the best option as it is very calm and perfect for beginners.
Triocean Surf is an approved RNLI surf hire centre and is located just five minutes away from Bantham Beach – the best surfing beach in South Devon. They hire and sell surfboards, wetsuits, Stand-Up Paddleboards, kayaks and more all year round and also lend softracks free of charge, so you don’t have to worry about transporting your boards or kayaks to the beach.
Some of the Coast & Country Cottages team recently enjoyed a taster Stand-Up Paddle Boarding session with TriOcean Surf on the estuary at Kingsbidge. Alice Jones, Seasonal Marketing Assistant, explains ‘after being given a few pointers by the team from Tri Ocean Surf about how to use the paddles and the best way to stand on the board, we attempted the difficult task of actually standing up – which is easier said than done! Only two of the Coast & Country Cottages team had been on a paddle board before so this was a first for most. Once up, we set out along the picturesque Kingsbridge Estuary – said to be one of the best places to paddle board in the area.
With only one of our team falling into the estuary, we made it safely, and mostly dryly, to shore having all had a fantastic time on our individual boards! Once we had made it back, Dave, one of the Tri Ocean team, tested us once more with the maiden voyage of the world’s biggest paddle board! This board managed to fit six of us (plus a seventh passenger) on comfortably with space for us all to paddle! This paddle board was far more unstable as every time someone moved we all nearly fell in! Unbelievably, we all managed to get to shore without falling in this time – something which I still can’t believe! Although it was unnerving at times, this was absolutely incredible fun and highly recommended when holidaying in South Devon.
Adds Alice, “on behalf of Coast & Country Cottages, we would like to say a massive thank you to Dave, Tom and Matt for giving up their evening to teach us how to paddle board. We would definately suggest it for anyone who wants to give something new a try during their holiday in South Devon”.
