This weekend marks the start of the official 70th Anniversary Commemorations of the Exercise Tiger tragedy, in which 946 serviceman were lost off Slapton Beach in World War 2, when German E-boats attacked a convoy positioning for practice landings.
The commemorative activities include events in a large marquee next to the memorial Sherman tank at Slapton Sands. Today, school children from across the South Hams will be visiting the marquee and will have the opportunity to see a documentary of historical footage covering Exercise Tiger.
Throughout the weekend, there will be various activities including various talks and recounts from two Veterans of Exercise Tiger who have made the journey from the United States especially for the anniversary weekend.
