Salcombe’s crab fishing industry is coming out of its shell from 10 am on Sunday 30th April for Crabfest 2017, the harbour town’s vibrant festival of all-things related to local crab and seafood.
Like last year’s inaugural event, Crabfest 2017 will take place on Island Street and across picturesque Salcombe. The BBC’s David Fitzgerald will usher in this year’s festival by interviewing a celebrity chef (details to be revealed soon).
With over 40 exhibitors coming along, you’ll be able to take part in hands-on demonstrations, receive crab picking tuition, listen to a commercial crab fishing talk, enjoy live music, sample local wines and much more.
Prominent local chefs will be showing us all how it’s done, including Jane Baxter of Wild Artichokes, South Sands Hotel’s Allister Bishop, and Andy Richardson, Head Chef at the Oyster Shack.
The event is hosted by the Rotary Club of Salcombe in conjunction with Salcombe Information Centre, Favis of Salcombe and Coast & Country Cottages. As well as celebrating Salcombe’s historic crab fishing industry, it raises money for important charities.
First Responders are this year’s charity of choice along with a range of smaller local organisations.
As proud sponsors of Salcombe Crabfest, our locally-based team at Coast & Country Cottages will be busy manning our Island Street stall throughout the festival. Like last year, we’ll be providing fun activities for kids like face painting, toy fishing and painting crab shells. And no, parents won’t have to ‘shell out’ a penny – all our activities are free!
The (so far!) very short history of Salcombe Crabfest
With the promise of a day of delicious local seafood and the buzz of anticipation in the air, visitors and exhibitors gathered in Salcombe on May Day 2016 for the town’s first ever Crabfest. Over 3,000 people came, so expect similar numbers of people in Salcombe to join in the fun in 2017.
Queen of Cakes Mary Berry CBE sprinkled stardust on the proceedings at 10 am when she opened the festival. It was the start of a busy day for Mary as she went on to sign books, appear on BBC Radio Devon and chat with the BBC’s Jennie Bond in front of a hugely appreciative audience.
Salcombe Crabfest shows visitors so much about what’s great about Salcombe and South Devon – for example, excellent local food, warm hospitality and lively communities.
