November 13th, 2015 | By Vicky Rogers
From jolly mornings spent exploring Salcombe and Dartmouth’s shopping treasure troves in search of unusual Christmas gifts, to exciting afternoons meeting Santa in his grotto at one of the many all-weather family attractions across South Devon, there are numerous ways to enjoy a festive day out with the kids this December.
Traditional Christmas Family Fun
There are many events taking place across South Devon throughout the festive season that lend themselves to a traditional Christmas-themed day out with the kids. Head to Pennywell Farm, where you can enjoy their Nativity play, complete with real animals! Set in the barn, with a manger and donkeys, visitors are encouraged to dress up and get involved in the play, or simply sit back and watch the magic unfold. Join the Christmas carol singing, before heading to Santa’s Grotto, where your family can meet the reindeer. Then enjoy the Christmas refreshments, including festive biscuits for children, and mince pies and mulled wine for the adults – the perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations, and a great way to spend a day out with the kids!
For many, the lead up to Christmas includes much time spent perusing the internet and pounding the streets in search of presents for loved ones – why not make this more fun for both you and the children? Head to the annual Kingsbridge Celebrates Christmas event on 5th December, and enjoy an exciting day out with the kids. Now in its eighth year, this special event includes numerous street stalls selling Christmas treats, gifts and cards. There will also be many food stands, carol singing, street entertainers and much more…
If you prefer to complete your Christmas shopping in a more peaceful environment, without the hustle and bustle found at festive events, why not pop to the picturesque sailing town of Salcombe, where you can visit one of the many boutique shops and art galleries. The children will love browsing the shelves lined with sweets at the traditional sweet shop Cranch’s – or perhaps they could visit the park whilst you buy those all-important gifts. With everything from delicious homemade fudge, to clothing and shoes, jewellery and even paintings, you are sure to find that perfect present, and have a lovely day out with the kids at the same time! For an extra special treat, stop for a crab sandwich or a more festive themed lunch at one of the many eateries in Salcombe – bliss!
