For children across the country the countdown has already begun to October Half Term at the end of the month. For many children this year, the school holidays will culminate with Halloween celebrations on 31st October. If you are visiting South Devon this October, there are numerous Halloween activities for kids (and grown ups!) to enjoy. Here are just a few events taking place:
‘Jollyween’ at Pennywell Farm
This year, the family friendly attraction Pennywell Farm is celebrating Halloween slightly differently, with an aptly named ‘Jollyween’ event during October Half Term. Enjoy a host of themed Halloween activities for kids, including Pennywell Pumpkin Olympics, the pumpkin and giant spoon race, pumpkin tossing, pumpkin skittles and a pumpkin quiz (with clues all around the farm). For those on holiday, let your children try their hand at free pumpkin carving on site, saving you any mess in your holiday cottage! Once you have enjoyed all the Halloween activities for kids, turn your attention to the Pennywell animals, including the miniature piglets who are just waiting for a cuddle.
Riverford Farm Pumpkin Day
On 24th October, enjoy a day of Halloween activities for kids at Riverford Farm’s Pumpkin Day, at Wash Farm, near Dartington. Take a farm tour on the tractor and trailer, try your hand at pumpkin carving and sample a delicious array of seasonal food. Last year over 6500 visitors attended the event across the four Riverford Farms, and this year looks set to be just as popular – make a note in your diary!
From 24th October to 1st November, Woodlands Leisure Park near Dartmouth is transformed for their renowned ‘Halloscream’ week. An all-weather family attraction, Woodlands ‘Halloscream’ week offers Halloween activities for kids of all ages, including 20,000 free pumpkins for children to carve, creepy Halloween competitions, children’s Halloween craft workshops and family trick & treat. There are also some new attractions for one week only – Marty’s Monster Manor, and Esmeralda the Wicked Witch of Woodlands! Join Esmeralda for a wicked time of spooky story telling, broomstick training and monstrous party dances. There will also be a Big Ghost Hunt on the Spooky Train, Spooks Olympics and a Phantom’s Pirate Maze! With all of these Halloween activities for kids, plus the normal attractions like the Zoo Farm, this is a day out that the whole family will enjoy.
For slightly more conventional Halloween activities for kids, head to Buckland Tout Saints Hotel in the South Devon countryside on Friday 30th October between 6pm-8pm, where families can enjoy Ghost Tours with the Moonstone Theatre Company. This Halloween event is fun for all the family with games, spooky snacks and some fabulous fireworks. Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children
Halloween Fayre, Dartmouth
On 31st October, head to the Old Market in Dartmouth, where you can enjoy traditional Halloween activities for kids. With lots of stalls including toffee apples, popcorn, soup, cakes and apple bobbing, not to mention face painting, music and a Halloween fancy dress competition, this family event, in aid of the charity Children’s Hospice South West, is not to be missed!
