The highlights of holidays with pets in South Devon

In my view, South Devon is unrivalled for holidays with pets with the large expanses of springy sand that seem to continue forever, not to mention the fact that there are so many new doggie friends to meet and greet along the way! When you’ve got woodland to explore as well as the sea for swimming, the South Hams is heaven for both the owner and the pet themselves!
If, like me, you’re an early riser, you get the pick of the bunch from a whole load of great beaches to enjoy, without the chance of your dog running off with someone’s sandwiches! A firm favourite with me is South Milton Sands (Thurlestone Sands) and it’s definitely a highlight of holidays with pets. Popular with visitors and locals alike, dogs can run in and out of the waves for hours on end, whilst owners can relax in the sunshine. From here you can walk to Hope Cove along the South West Coast Path; although dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches in the summer, they are welcome at the Hope and Anchor, which has a large outside seating area serving everything from a Full English breakfast to locally caught lobster.
With plenty of soft sand for running about and shallow, sheltered water for doing some ‘doggy paddle’, Mill Bay beach near East Portlemouth is perfect for dog days out when on holiday with pets in the South Hams. For more energetic dogs- and more energetic owners- the coastal path continues around the peninsula to Gara Rock. The Venus Café above the beach is a scenic spot to grab a bite to eat or drink- ice-creams are popular- and it is dog friendly. From the slipway you can take the East Portlemouth Ferry for a quick trip- free for dogs- into the bustling town of Salcombe, full of exciting things to see and do. Why not grab a famous Devonshire pasty from The Bake House in town; Cliff Gardens is the perfect location for a relaxing afternoon when on holiday with pets as dogs are allowed to run and play, especially in the lower part of the gardens. For evening drinks or dinner The Victoria Inn is a favourite with dogs and owners alike. Offering a special dog’s menu to keep pets entertained, the pub has a friendly atmosphere and a large beer garden to relax in after a busy day at the beach.
For a wonderful woodland walk on holidays with pets, you can park at Avon Mill Garden Centre, Loddiswell, and walk along the road until you reach the old railway station. From there you enter the woods and can wander along the crystal clear River Avon, before taking a refreshing dip in the water to cool down. On return to the garden centre, enjoy a drink at the café (with a dog friendly area) and grab some delicious dog treats from the deli.
To make your holidays with pets even easier there are a number of ways to make your stay care free. For stylish pets there are a number of ‘salons’ in the South Hams; Posh Pooch in Dartmouth and In The Dog House in Kingsbridge are favourites with the locals, with the latter also stocking a wide range of tasty treats, dog food and luxury shampoo, leaving your canine friend smelling salon-fresh every day!
The South Hams has many walks, beaches and amenities to make holidays with pets memorable, fun and relaxed.
