Our favourite things in South Devon

Everyone that visits South Devon will have a favourite part of this special area that they take away with them – whether it be memories of the breathtaking views over the iconic Thurlestone Rock, or the delicious taste of freshly baked scones with your traditional Devonshire cream tea! The privileged Coast & Country Cottages team are lucky enough to live and work in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and regularly visit their portfolio of over 430 holiday homes in the area. Here is a fantastic insight in to the team’s very own ‘best bits’ of South Devon and the holiday homes in the area.

The views

From the picturesque Start Bay coastline, to the awe-inspiring rolling South Devon hills, the area is certainly home to some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere. Many Coast & Country Cottages holiday properties are situated in prime coastal and rural locations, boasting some of the best sea and country views possible. Dartmouth based Trainee Assistant Operations Manager Luke says “You simply can’t beat the views over the River Dart from the loft conversion at Onedin House. Whilst checking the property, I often find myself gazing towards Dartmouth Castle from the top floor sitting room window. It is without doubt one of the best views in Dartmouth”. Onedin House is a stylish late Victorian house, sleeping up to 6 people – the ideal base to explore Dartmouth!

Property and Quality Assessor Rachel, continues “my favourite view has to be from the hot tub at Blue Horizon, 116 Above Town in Dartmouth. I can just imagine relaxing in the water with a glass of something chilled, whilst gazing over the River Dart and out to sea…” Blue Horizon is ideal accommodation for a larger party of up to 8 adults, within a 10 minute walk of Dartmouth’s boutique shops and restaurants.

For those who prefer rural scenes, the picturesque far reaching views that can be enjoyed from the family friendly property Jack’s Cottage, near Totnes, across the countryside to Dartmoor beyond are second to none.

The finer things in life…

From beautiful paintings to fabulous ornaments, many Coast & Country Cottages holiday properties are home to some beautiful artefacts.

Higher Collaton Cottage is a chocolate box thatched cottage in a peaceful location, just a 10 minute drive from the popular sailing town of Salcombe – the perfect bolt hole for art enthusiasts looking for an inspiring break in South Devon.  Assistant Operations Manager D says: “I love the picture in the lounge at Higher Collaton Cottage. I have spoken to the owners about this in the past, and it is a one-off piece that they bought from a boutique shop. It is beautiful – I have art envy!”

Other interesting and notable properties for their artefacts include the nautically themed 7 Dart Marina in Dartmouth. This luxury waterside apartment is home to two large scale, glass enclosed model ships, including one of a Baltic trading schooner. Situated on the banks of the River Dart, the Dart Marina apartments are in one of South Devon’s most sought after locations, providing sumptuous accommodation for those that love to be on or near the water.

Get back to nature

Many of Coast & Country Cottages South Devon holiday homes have beautiful gardens – from quaint courtyards to acres of manicured lawns interspersed with colourful flower beds. Assistant Operations Manager Suzy says “I LOVE the tree in the front garden at Woodwell – it is really unusual! And the views from this luxury property are second to none as well!” Woodwell is a recently constructed holiday property sleeping 8, in a wonderful position overlooking the Salcombe estuary. Featuring a fantastic terrace, perfect for alfresco dining, the outside space at this delightful property is designed to make the most of the spectacular views!

The coastal property Broadsands (sleeps 12) in Thurlestone is also home to beautiful gardens, perfect for children wanting to play ball games  – boasting a spacious lawn area children can enjoy a game of cricket with ease. The garden also has quieter seated area, for those looking for a peaceful spot to enjoy reading a good book!
