You’ve probably watched our fantastic video on #7DaysInSouthDevon but you may be thinking, can I actually do something different every day? The answer is, most certainly, yes and, here, we’ve put together some suggestions as to what we believe are the unmissable activities when in South Devon!
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Venus Café at Blackpool Sands overlooking one of the most popular beaches in South Devon. With stunning views, this is a breakfast spot you will definitely want to brag about to your friends from home! After breakfast, spend the morning relaxing on the beach and maybe even hire a kayak or paddleboard and set out on the protected waters in the bay; there are even lifeguard patrols on Blackpool Sands during the Summer months. Why not then head to Torcross – yet another popular South Devon beach. Feed the ducks and watch the beautiful wildlife along the Slapton Ley Nature Reserve before visiting the World War Two tank located at the edge of the carpark. Get fish & chips from the Start Bay Inn to enjoy on the beach – a perfect end to the day.
Spend the morning taking a pleasant stroll along Hallsands beach, perhaps bring a picnic and savour it whilst watching the fishermen haul in their catch. Climb the steps up to the South West Coastal Path to see the ruins of the historic old village of South Hallsands from the viewing platform. Walk along the coast path to the Start Point Lighthouse or the other direction to nearby Beesands and join one of the many budding fishermen. For seafood and fish lovers, you have to try Britannia @ the Beach, this laid back restaurant produces delightful fish dishes and is the perfect place to try the delicious South Devon crab. Hallsands and Beesands are dog friendly and Britannia @ the Beach also allows dogs, so you can even take your four-legged friend along with you.
Have a relaxing morning pottering about the shops in Kingsbridge and enjoying a cup of coffee at Coasters coffee shop. Make time to visit some of the local independent stores along Fore Street where you can get little gifts and locally made crafts to take home as souvenirs. Head to the Crabshell Inn for lunch and maybe even indulge in an early afternoon glass of wine – you are on holiday after all! After lunch, take a gentle walk along to Bowcombe and spend the afternoon crabbing and paddleboarding; you can hire paddleboards from Tri Ocean Surf at Churchstow Business Park near Kingsbridge. Take a barbecue down to Bowcombe and bask in the beautiful evening sun after this relaxing day.
If you are looking to spend a second blissful morning breakfasting on the beach, Venus Café have yet another beachside location at Bigbury on Sea and you can sip your coffee enjoying views overlooking the stunning Burgh Island and out to sea. Take the sea-tractor across to Burgh Island when the tide is in to experience yet another little quirk of South Devon and walk to the top of this inspiring island – literary and music lovers may recognise it as the inspirational setting for the Agatha Christie mystery ‘Evil Under the Sun’ and musician Ben Howard’s EP entitled ‘The Burgh Island’. After the trip to Burgh Island, try your hand at surfing with Discovery Surf School and see if you can catch any waves.
What most people seem to love most about holidaying in South Devon are the beaches, so why not take a trip to South Milton Sands. We recommend taking a walk through Thurlestone village and across the cliff path to the beach to make the most of the beautiful South West Coast Path and surrounding scenery. South Milton Sands is loved by locals and visitors alike and it is not difficult to see why; with beautiful still waters on which you can paddleboard, kayak or just take a swim! A dog-friendly beach all year round, South Milton Sands is a fantastic place to spend the day and there’s even a café where you can grab some lunch. The best thing to do at South Milton, though, is to take a barbecue with your family and friends watching the incredible sunset.
For another great day at the beach, head down to Hope Cove and spend the day exploring the rock pools and building sandcastles. Grab lunch at The Hope and Anchor pub and take a mid-day stroll along the South West Coastal Path before treating yourself with an ice-cream. Hope Cove is brilliant for those who want to go out on the water and is perfect for a paddle. Discover both beaches whilst in Hope Cove and divide your day between the two experiencing the breath-taking views from both, with the turquoise waters and stunning scenery you really could be anywhere in the world…
On the final day, you may want to take the morning to relax in one of the many spas South Devon has to offer; such as the Dart Marina Spa or The Voyage Spa at The Thurlestone Hotel. Many of Coast & Country Cottages properties have complimentary spa memberships so if this is something you’re interested in, the team will be more than happy to suggest which properties offer this or alternatively book a spa day which includes use of the facilities. If you want something for the whole family – why not explore the South West Coast Path and see what you can find. There are many quirky pubs in the villages along the way so you can indulge in one last taste of South Devon before heading home.
