Following on from yesterday’s post… . 1942 saw a very sad time for my grandma when her Fiancé was shot down over the sea during the battle of Malta. Mick’s name is on the war memorial on the Island and grandma visited it many years later ♥️ . VE Day (when Europe recognised the surrender of Nazi Germany) 1945 saw life change again. The first my grandma and the factory girls knew was the sounding of ships horns in the Port of Liverpool. A dance was organised at their hostel that evening 💃🏻 After the war grandma went back home with ideas of a better job. This time the post office was her target 📮 She got the job as a counter clerk and was given a very large manual to read and learn. Grandma was on the counter that sold postal orders, money orders and stamps 💌 Other things such as dog and radio licences were sold at a different counter. It was here that she met Alan her husband to be (and my grandad!) On 4th August 1950 (on her birthday) behind the counter he proposed to her 💍 . Grandad and grandma applied to work for the Postmaster at Crowthorne nearby. The job came with accommodation and in their tiny flat grandma made the first Christmas puddings of her married life…. sadly they boiled dry and caught fire 🔥 The next disaster was loosing their home because they soon had children, they were not allowed in the flat. When grandma became pregnant they had to find a new home and job. So back to grandma’s parents home where My mum spent the first few weeks of her life, then to the other grandparents house! . Their first home was a semi detached house with a long garden built in the 1930s. it cost them £1,950! Money was tight but grandma was thrifty so she always managed 💵 So how did my grandma save money? Old vests became dishcloths, old dishcloths became floor cloths, tea towels went the same way. When the sauce bottle looked empty a small amount of vinegar was added and shaken up so there was sauce for a couple more days. The left over from the Sunday meat was minced up and turned into a shepherds pie or the meat was served cold with bubble and squeak from the left over veg 🌽🥕🥦 Stale sponge cake became trifle! . Ive run out of space again 😂 tbc
