South Devon’s stunning coast and countryside are home to an abundance of historic tales, myths and legends, so where better to enjoy a historic holiday? Venture to the rugged landscape of Dartmoor for tales of old, or even follow in the footsteps of movie stars that have featured in award-winning films about Britain’s history, including War Horse, filmed on Dartmoor.

To unveil the history of the South Devon coastline, head to the naval town of Dartmouth to explore Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle from across the River Dart. Alternatively, see the iconic destinations where the Mayflower vessel was docked, including Dartmouth and the maritime city of Plymouth, where the vessel set off from in 1620.

Plymouth is a hot spot for history-buffs. Legend has it that Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe when he was informed of the first sightings of the Spanish Armada. There is so much history to soak up in Plymouth, and the coastal views are beautiful.

See a war tank, lifted from the depths of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, adjacent to Torcross Beach and Slapton Sands in Start Bay. This tank was used in Operation Tiger in 1944 and is now used as a memorial to remember those that lost their lives. This is a must-visit when holidaying in South Devon and the beach opposite is fabulous, as are the surrounding walks and fish and chip spots!
