For writers and musicians, thespians and artists – indeed, anyone with a creative flare – South Devon offers inspiration in abundance! From the rolling green hills to the gentle lapping of the waves on the beach, and the chorus of birdsong emanating from the hedgerows, the region can inspire all the senses and help you to get creative, whatever your preferred art medium. With so much to motivate and stimulate, it is no surprise that the region is home to a number of gifted artists, including the local illustrator Tor Allen. Based in Modbury, Tor teaches art classes regularly, and is responsible for the stunning artwork featured on the front cover of View 2019. We caught up with Tor to find out a little more about her work…

How did your passion for art begin?
I constantly made things as a child. I remember doing my first still life drawing at school aged about 13 and getting 9/10 and being astonished. I realised then that it was something I could do and that I enjoyed it!

What inspires your work most when you’re out and about in South Devon?
Everything really. The light, the colours – I especially love birds so they feature in a lot of my work. I enjoy the shapes in the landscape and coastline. My partner is a Ranger, so I find his knowledge inspiring too.

Where do you most like to work?
If I’m at home, I love my studio which has a wonderful view and no telephone or wifi. If I’m out, I find coastline and estuaries hold the most interest for me. I love the sea and you’re always going to find some interesting birds to watch or boats on the water. Bolberry Down, Snapes Point and the coastal path near Overbecks are a few favourites around Salcombe.

Any advice to budding artists looking to draw or paint on holiday?
Keep it simple. A little sketch book, a pencil or drawing pen and maybe a small set of travel water colours. Just sit and look and enjoy losing yourself in the experience of capturing what you can see. It’s all practice, don’t worry about producing a masterpiece!
