Dartmouth Castle, one of the most significant castles in Devon, guards the entrance to the River Dart. This fortress showcases South Devon’s rich maritime history and its strategic importance. Dartmouth’s thriving commercial port, dating back to the 12th century, required protection during the Hundred Years War (1336) and as such, construction of Dartmouth Castle began in 1388 under Mayor John Hawley, following King Richard II’s orders. Over the centuries it expanded to include a Gun Tower and bulwark, with the nearby Kingswear Castle completed in 1502.
