With miles of spectacular coastline, woodland trails, riverside rambles and rolling countryside, South Devon has a myriad of stunning...
Walking the South West Coast Path can work up a bit of an appetite so, if like us, you’re one of those people that loves to plan your day around the different places to eat, try the Hope Cove to Thurlestone walk. This route is also perfect if you’re on holiday with a larger group and some members of the party are slightly disgruntled hikers – the promise of different eateries keeping even the most resentful walker at bay…
Before you set off, pop into The Cove Café Bar for brunch. This dog-friendly café bar serves some of the best breakfast foods in the local area, utilising the abundance of delicious Devon ingredients and offering wonderful takes on the classics. One of our favourites is self-named ‘Cove breakfast’ – delicious!

Now you’ve fuelled yourself up for the day, set off over the beautiful cliffs towards South Milton Sands using the steps at the right of Mouthwell Sands.
When you reach the top of the steps, make sure to pause for a moment at the lookout where you can fully appreciate the spectacular view across Hope Cove and Bolt Tail. This view still takes our breath away and we’re lucky enough to be able to visit all the time!
Follow the path for around 15 minutes until you reach the first gate.
Go through the gate and then turn right down the lane alongside the white house.
Turn left at the end of this lane where the beach will come into sight.
Once at the beach, paddle along the shores or explore the rock pools before stopping for a coffee and cake at the Beachhouse. With South Milton Sands being dog-friendly all year round, the Beachhouse often offer complimentary dog treats and they always have water bowls for your pooch so they don’t have to miss out on any of the fun.
Once you’ve rested your legs and finished your coffee, take your time ambling along the beach.
Follow the steps up towards Links Court and then take the path down the hill towards Thurlestone Golf Club.
At the Golf Club, keep going along the South West Coast Path – but be careful to avoid golfers along the first stretch as they have right of way.
Veer right and walk across the designated path across the golf course, making your way towards Thurlestone Village where you’ll find The Village Inn. The Village Inn is perfect for grabbing an early afternoon drink or, for those who may have opted for the lighter brunch option, this pub does brilliant fish and chips.
From here, you can either amble back the way you came, or if you feel you may have overindulged, there are many local taxis that can help you find your way home! If you want to try out a final pub, head to The Hope & Anchor in Hope Cove for a final drink where the local ales and beach view will prove to be a perfect end to your walk from Hope Cove to Thurlestone!
Drake House is an impressive holiday property, located in an enviable position in Hope Cove and boasts incredible, uninterrupted views out to sea. Sleeping 10, Drake House is the perfect place for a luxury family gathering or special occasion.
