Finding original or interesting Christmas presents for our loved ones can be a challenge. The most convenient option may be to rely on some of the major retailers found all over the country or to shop online. But it’s nice to give something a little different from time to time.

Perhaps one of South Devon’s unique businesses can come to the rescue. Here are seven ideas for special gifts with a strong local connection, ideal for those with a love of the area. We’ve picked out a range of options to suit all tastes and budgets, from a box of clotted cream fudge to something bespoke from the Canvas Factory.

1. Will Bees Bespoke (Salcombe)

Specialising in bags, clutches, purses and pouches, Will Bees Bespoke is based on Salcombe’s Island Street, amongst a quirky collection of boatyards and chandleries, art galleries and other enterprising local businesses – including Coast & Country Cottages!

You can often see their talented artisans at work at the window or in the workshop, producing exceptional items that make fantastic presents. Products can be personalised with embroidered names or initials while you wait, with the fee for this included in the price of purchase.

Learn more on the Will Bees website or pop along to Island Street to have a look for yourself.

2. Canvas Factory (Dartmouth)

Dartmouth’s answer to Will Bees, the Canvas Factory is located on Foss Street, a quiet cobbled street just off Victoria Road. Here you can purchase a range of handmade, hard-wearing yet stylish bags and accessories.

These include completely bespoke options if you’d like something truly unique, and the Canvas Factory can also embroider your gift to order.

3. The South Devon Chilli Farm (Loddiswell)

The South Devon Chilli Farm

South Devon Chilli Farm is situated on the edge of Loddiswell amidst glorious South Devon countryside. There’s a show tunnel, a colourful café with a deliciously chilli-focused menu, and an impressive gift shop on site.

Just about every chilli-infused product you can think of, from chilli jam to spicy hot chocolate, is available here, including plenty of items packaged nicely as gift sets. If you know someone with a serious love of all things spicy, the South Devon Chilli Farm is surely worth a visit in time for Christmas.

4. Salcombe Gin (Salcombe)

Salcombe Gin

A newcomer in the gin world yet one with a rapidly growing reputation, Salcombe Gin is made the traditional way in a distillery close to our Salcombe office on Island Street. How about presenting a friend or loved one with a bottle of this tasty local tipple? Another option is to order a gift voucher for a gin making experience at Salcombe Gin School. The lucky recipient will take charge of their own mini copper still, choose from a range of botanicals and name their own bottle to take home.

5. Edward’s Fudge Kitchen (Dartmouth)

Edward’s Fudge Kitchen was a joint winner of our “Finest South Devon Fudge” competition in 2016, and makes an authentically local, clotted cream-based version of this traditional sweet treat. You can buy gift packs of various sizes, choosing from an extensive range of flavours, from the tried-and-tested to more unusual, with lemon meringue and peanut butter options both available.

6. Sharpham Wine and Cheese (Ashprington)

The Sharpham Estate sits on the south-facing slopes of the Dart at a glorious, meandering section of the river close to Totnes. Sharpham’s award-winning wines, derived from Madeline Angevines imported originally from the French Loire, make fabulous Christmas presents, especially their multi-award-winning Champagne equivalent, which took home Silver prizes in the International Wine Challenge and UKVA National Awards, as well as receiving a Gold Taste of the West award.
