How to maximise your South Devon winter weekend getaway

A weekend getaway can at first, seem pretty short, and you may find yourself a little overwhelmed at how you will manage to fit everything in. The good news is that with a little planning, you can fit a lot in! Here are our top tips on planning the perfect winter weekend getaway…

Do your research
One of our biggest tips for weekend breaks is to plan as much as you can, even if that means planning to have a little down time. Research the local area, nearby eateries, and maybe even plan a walking route if you’re keen to spend your time doing something active. Our South Devon Guide is brimming with information, so be sure to have a read and identify yourself with the ins and outs of the region.

Feast on sumptuous food
South Devon is a food lover’s haven, and every corner turned will reveal cafes and restaurants serving fresh, local and seasonal produce. Even in the quieter season, you will find the foodie establishments a hive of activity, so we recommend booking in advance if there is somewhere in particular you would like to try. Just a few of our favourites include The Oyster Shack in Bigbury, The Journey’s End Inn in Ringmore and dickandwills in Salcombe.

For more inspiration, read our articles on where to find the best roast lunch, and where to find the best pub food.

Pre-order a food hamper
With milk, bread, eggs, bacon, tea and coffee arriving on your doorstep, you won’t have to worry about spending time at the shops. Local companies, such as our friends at Pretty Local supply weekend boxes, breakfast boxes and even a Sunday roast box, and best of all, the produce is locally sourced. The team at Coast & Country Cottages can happily assist with this, so give us a call, and we can help to make sure that all your weekend essentials are delivered straight to your door.

Book a property with a fire
At Coast & Country Cottages we have a fabulous selection of properties boasting an open fire or log burner. Although a weekend getaway provides a limited amount of time, we encourage you to take a little time to slow down, so snuggle up in front of the fire and read your book. Why not pre-order firewood, so you are fully stocked for the weekend.

Get out there!
Just because it is winter, it doesn’t mean you have to hibernate, there is nothing more exhilarating than embracing the wilder elements. With a myriad of paths that crisscross the region, navigating the coast path, woodland trails and riverbanks, there is no excuse to stay inside, whatever the weather! If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, how about booking a surf lesson with Discovery Surf School, or trying out a kayaking/paddle boarding session. Regardless, push yourself out of your comfort zone and try something new.

South Devon boasts an enviable selection of luxurious spas, where you can indulge in spa treatments, and also spend your time using the facilities. Salcombe Harbour Hotel, Dart Marina Hotel & Spa and Thurlestone Hotel are popular choices amongst both locals and visitors.

Earmark upcoming festivities
The region hosts an array of events throughout the calendar year, and during the winter period the calendar is positively brimming with festivities. From a candlelit procession and steam train light parade, to craft fairs and carols around the Christmas tree, there is a wealth of choice, so be sure to keep an eye on what’s happening during your winter weekend getaway.
