As the summer holidays draw to a close, we find ourselves knocking on the door of Autumn. South Devon...
Long gone are the days when ‘pub food’ meant little more than peanuts and pork scratchings – some of the country’s best food is served in pubs and nowhere is that truer than in our region.
If you’re looking for the best pub food in South Devon, these five fabulous foodie pubs are a great place to start.
Winners of two hugely prestigious awards, The Victoria Inn on Fore Street in Salcombe is a must-visit for those looking for a traditional pub experience alongside exceptional food. Based on making the most of the region’s wonderful produce, the seasonal menu includes a mix of original and classic meat, fish and vegetable dishes.
The Cricket Inn’s location in Start Bay provides more than stunning views – it’s also perfect for sourcing delicious fresh seafood for their enticing menu. As well as serving delicious fish dishes, the Cricket Inn has a Josper oven for providing meat and vegetables with a delicious chargrilled, barbecued flavour throughout the year.
Combining fine French cuisine with classic English pub food is the hallmark of this cosy gastro-pub, which you’ll find nestled in the pretty creek-side village of South Pool. Award-winning chef Jean-Phillippe Bidart has turned this charming pub into one of the region’s most renowned eateries, with a longstanding reputation for providing some of the best pub food in South Devon.
The atmospheric, traditional ambiance of The Village Inn alongside its enviable location in the picturesque coastal village of Thurlestone do much to recommend it. But it’s for the food that this popular pub really stands out. The fantastic seasonal menu, which caters especially well for vegetarians and those with allergies and intolerances, means it’s ideal for groups with varying tastes or requirements.
Described as ‘exciting’ with ‘powerful flavours’ by Taste of the West, the food at this 15th century coaching inn is far from typical ‘pub grub’. A semi-finalist in the 2015 Master Chef Professionals competition, Head Chef at The Sea Trout Inn, Kris Jury, has worked for Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay – which may explain something about the outstanding food.
