Quarterdeck

It was a brilliant holiday, Quarterdeck was excellent accommodation and you couldn’t beat the view from the garden.

It was close to the beach and although uphill on the way back, it was manageable and I enjoyed taking a rest on the bench and looking at the sea. There was everything you needed at the bungalow and we were extremely comfortable and I have no problem recommending this property

A lovely well equipped & comfortable property.

Stunning uninterrupted views of the coastline & even in hot weather a gentle breeze. Large picket fenced garden our Jack Russell enjoyed. A walk to the beach down a steep hill for the active but a huge car park by the beach if you prefer not to walk back up the hill! We have showed our interest to the very helpful owners to book for next year.

Quarterdeck is ideally set up for beach holidays.

It would be especially suitable for families with small children. There is plenty of room and the garden all around the property is enclosed. It is just a short walk down the hill to the beach. It is well equipped and very cosy.

Absolutely beautiful position overlooking the sea & Burgh island.

I felt like I’d stepped back in time. Peaceful & clean location, with easy route directly onto the beach. Easy to park a big car on the drive & very nicely attended fenced garden offering panoramic views over the sea from every aspect. A warm, clean & comfortable property with everything one would require to make a perfect holiday. Comfortable double bed. Good shower pressure with hot water, always. We didn’t need to light the fire, storage heaters were enough to keep the property warm throughout. This was a very comfortable property for the two of us. We would definitely return & are missing the location already. Thank you.

The location is outstanding and only drawback for two elderly people was steep hill back from the beach but without this there would not be the amazing views.

This property is really comfortable and well maintained, and being so near to the beach makes it perfect.

Quarterdeck was great when we arrived and the Owners were helpful and contacted us when we arrived to check all was ok.

However we would not recommend this way of booking, as Helpful Holidays was a dreadful website to use and hopeless and almost impossible to to get hold of, before we went there. Quarterdeck which we stayed in is a great property with great owners but Helpful Holidays is most unhelpful, truly terrible to deal with. S and C.

Really lovely location with sea views from every room.

ideal for a young Family who don't mind toiling up a steep hill after a day at the beach, unless of course you take the Car and pay for parking. Walkers will have easy access to the coast path. Very neat and tidy Kitchen and Bathroom, fairly new I would say and the Utility room was ideal and convenient. Maybe time to replace the Sofas, they were very low. Very comprehensive instruction booklet and easy to follow. All things considered this was good value for money property.

Lovely property which is very well equipped.

With superb sea views from every window, a large garden which surrounds the bungalow on all sides - this place is special! I too was concerned about the absence of gates on the property, owning a rather inquisitive young Labrador, but solved this problem by taking a mesh zigzag! (Amazon) which fitted across the opening. Would certainly go again.

What an absolute Gem!

The location , THE VIEW FROM EVERY ROOM !! the gardens , the taste & quality of the decor , the attention to detail - literally the lovely owners have thought of absolutely everything (Including a lovely welcome gifts!) We have been visiting south Devon for many years & this is one of the best places we have stayed in . We were 5 Adults (& a Westie ) staying for a week , the owner contacted us before our trip to ensure we were aware of the facilities , and we feel they went above an beyond to mange our expectations so had no problems at all with WC & Bathroom (the shower was amazing !! ) We could easily fit all 5 of us on the sofas ( there’s dining chairs & large table to use as well ) We had no problem with our dog in the garden ( she was quite happy on her very long lead so she could explore & we had peace of mind ) We were very sorry to leave & cannot wait to return ! Thank you Quarterdeck !!

The facilities were as advertised and the local walks and beach are the best in Devon.

The cottage has a fantastic location and view.

Everything you need is in the cottage. It was clean and well maintained. We had a wonderful holiday. Just one point of attention is the key box. We had great difficulty opening it upon arrival (but maybe we did something wrong?). We definitely recommend this house.

The Bungalow sits above a steep hill, commanding the most spectacular views out to sea and Burgh Island, from 6 of its main windows.

The Bungalow was extremely warm and comfortable with every little thing thought of. The welcome treat of biscuits and wine a lovely added bonus. The main bedroom with a very comfortable king bed looked right onto Burgh island and was a treat to wake upto in the mornings. The kitchen well stocked with all you could want plus a large fridge freezer and washing machine in the utilities room and also a fridge in the kitchen plus a dishwasher. Beautiful large lawns surround the property, but as said in brochure I would not call it secure as the fencing is low and stops at the hard standing. But our dogs are well controlled so no problem for us. There are several large Sandy beaches for walking to and exercise the dogs, Challabourgh being a favourite as not far from bungalow and there is a shop (expensive) and a nice bar restaurant set on the campsite which allows outside customers. Down at Bigbury on sea, beach there is also a very nice Venus coffee bar that sales the most lovely food, and you can even eat in with the dogs on blowy cold days. Also a small beach shop but closed when we visited and does not open till middle April. The walk out to Burgh Island at low tide is very easy going, but again a very steep climb to the top for more wonderful views, and a welcome pint at the end in the old Pilchard inn. The car park at Bigbury we thought very expensive as privately owned by RCP. £12 for 6hrs. Also I would do a big shop before arriving next time as no near by shop to pop out to. We loved our stay and hopefully will visit again in the future.

Quarterdeck was very warm and cosy and had everything we needed for the week.

Views are spectacular from most rooms and it’s only a short walk to the beach. The welcome pack was a bonus.

Quarterdeck is a lovely, well equipped bungalow in a fantastic location with spectacular views.

Easy access to the beach just a short walk down the quiet road was perfect for us and our dogs. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. We will certainly be returning to Quarterdeck sometime in the future.

The house is lovely and in an idyllic setting.

However, this was listed as a pet friendly properly and it certainly is neither pet friendly nor child friendly. The whole of the front of the site is open to the road and I think more should be made of this in the listing. I have mentioned this to the owner in an e-mail to which he has replied 'access is required for large machinery' but I fail to see how gating the property and making it secure would prevent access. Another minus is the lack of adequate toilet and bathroom facilities for a family. A shower room with w.c would greatly improve the property. I realise that Sykes' own review states that it is more suitable for 4 persons rather than 5 but, even with 4, the queueing for facilities means late departures for the days activities. Apart from the negative comments above, the property is super and well equipped and in an unbeatable position. I would certainly return.

The house was clean and had fantastic views over the headlands and towards the island.

Some days we were in the clouds and couldn’t see a thing but that’s our weather for you. We did have an amazingly clear night to witness many shooting stars. For us the living accommodation in particular was too small. A note to self for future trips to check that there are at least two loos and a tumble dryer. For the price of Quarterdeck I would have expected both but my fault for not making sure. The house is very well equipped otherwise with everything you need. The kitchen, while small is well equipped, I even baked one morning! We had a few days of illness and the owner was helpful in making sure we had what we needed.

Our second visit to ‘Quarterdeck’, this time with superb weather all week, so we were able to make good use of the lovely garden, with its magnificent views from every aspect.

Beautiful views. Just a short walk to the beach. The property looked good - inside and out - and was very well equipped. I liked the pictures on the walls and the general layout of the property. Bedrooms were light and airy. Good kitchen with fridge and dishwasher. Utility room had a fridge/freezer and a sink. The room was ideal for leaving coats and boots. Indoor and outdoor games available. I cannot recommend The Quarterdeck too highly. I'd live here given half the chance.

We can thoroughly recommend Quaterdeck as a great holiday home.

It was clean,homely, comfortable and extremely well equipped. Everything you might need was there, and to top it all the views of the bay,were amazing.

Sofas uncomfortable.

Double Bed mattress worn out and very uncomfortable. TV in wrong position. Bungalow cold. Turned on storage heater in hall. Upped heat in bedroom.

Although we made the decision to cut our holiday down by one night when the the bad storm Ciaran hit the village, we had a great time at Quaterdeck, even with the bad weather, we managed to get out and walk nearly every day down to the beach.

The pictures don't do it justice, the views were a "WOW" and it is very homely, with everything you need. On arriving there was complementary tea, coffee, milk, a lovelly bottle of wine and some yummy shortbread, lovelly gesture 'thank you'. Would definitely go back.

Well provisioned kitchen and helpful information about the local area available from the owners and at the property. We very much enjoyed watching the sunsets each evening.

This is a lovely holiday cottage.

The owners have supplied first class information on the area which as it was our first time visiting it was extremely helpful. The layout of the bungalow with the side entrance into utility room made it ideal for bringing the dog in. The most marvellous place for a holiday with a dog!

Wonderful relaxing week staying at Quaterdeck with its stunning views of the sea and only just a short walk to the beautiful sandy beach and causeway at Bigbury-on-Sea.

Enjoyed the coastal paths and the local pubs before returning to the cozy warm bungalow to chill out! We will be back!!!

We have just returned after 70mph gales in Devon and very wet weather but none of this stopped us from enjoying the area or the warm welcome at The Quarterdeck.

First of all, booking was easy and communication from Sykes and later the owner was excellent. The photographs depicted the cottage accurately. You often wonder when you book whether the 'sea view' will be a sea view but we certainly got that! A view to die for from all living spaces. Easy to walk to too. The sea tractor was still running but the walks at low tide to Burgh Island were amazing. The Pilchard Pub was so welcoming. Genuinely old, lovely staff, food and drink. A different world. Quarterdeck itself was brilliant for 4 adults and their 2 dogs. A 5th adult could easily be accommodated. The utility room was brilliant for wet dogs and clothes. Really spacious. Kitchen very well equipped and a welcoming cuppa, milk, wine and biscuits awaited us. Lovely sitting room / dining room plus 3 bedrooms. We were short of nothing. High chair, outside seating all provided too if you needed it. As it was winter we tended to eat lunch out and dinner back at The Quarterdeck. I had brought some kitchen equipment with me but it wasn't needed. Large freezer and 2 fridges are provided as well. Lots of places to visit nearby as well as the beautiful coast. Just get used to windy roads, some of which are tidal! Great fun was had by us all. Thank you to Sykes and Peter and Sarah! xxxx

Quarterdeck is situated in a lovely spot , the picturess views from the garden or from inside are fantastic overlooking the bay and sea, the property is clean and tidy and has been refurnished,home from home and an ideal location to totally relax .

we had a fantastic week travelling out to nearby towns and bays lovely beach and coastal walks with our dog Alfie then relax back at quarterdeck in the garden with a beer and finally go to bed in a very comfy bed .had a lovely time .

Lovely place to stay it’s on a steep hill so if you’re not so fit you would need a car to and from the beach.

The position of Quarterdeck is something really special.

The garden that wraps all around the property gives the feeling of privacy and seclusion. I think it is the best property in Bigbury-on-Sea form which to watch the sunset. A real rare find and I was so happy to celebrate my 30th birthday in this unique location with my family. I will definitely be booking this property again.

The views are amazing & the cottage is extremely clean.

Quarterdeck was a real home from home.

From the moment we arrived, with a welcoming bottle of wine and shortbread biscuits, to the very well furnished and equipped home. Despite inclement weather we walked from the cottage each day with our dog, who lived the nearby beaches. An excellent week!

I would have no hesitation in recommending Quarterdeck.

The owners have endeavoured to equip the house with everything you need for for a comfortable stay. It also had a modern bathroom, useful large utility room, cosy log burning stove and stunning views. Perfectly located for the beach and for the wonderful coastal walks-we will definitely be back.

Local amenities (pubs, shops etc) not within walking distance. Heavily reliant on the car. Walking our little dog across the causeway to Burgh Island at low tide was great fun.

It should be noted that we had to use the car to get to the beach as the hill was too steep for us on the way back.

The beach was great. It was handy being able to play in the garden until the tide went out, the tide table provided was invaluable to plan our days.

Excellent location for a week's worth of playing on the beech. Lovely spacious property that had everything we needed. Utility room was perfect for keeping all the beach kit in one place. A week of hot sun helped too!!!!

Everything was great except the weather! The utility room was particularly useful. We loved it. The only thing lacking was a light in the fridge and I thought perhaps a little step for small children may be useful.

In need of some rest and relaxation, we set off to Devon and Bigbury on Sea with our faithful springador, Jack. What a treat was in store for us! Comfy beds with fluffy pillows and duvets, A powerful hot shower to energise us in the morning and the most amazing views from the sitting room windows! Very well equipped and spacious with a homely sitting room to relax in. Quarterdeck is a delight! We loved waking in the morning to the sound of sheep and baby lambs in the adjoining field and the incredible sunsets. Jack especially enjoyed the long walks and swimming in the sea!! He was less keen on visiting historic houses but we enjoyed them! There is so much to see and do and enjoy. Quarterdeck really is an excellent base for exploring and if like us, you bring your faithful friend, then the utility room is perfect for drying off and relaxing after a hard day’s work chasing your tennis ball into the sea! If you need to rest and relax or are in search of action and activity, then Quarterdeck makes a fabulous base. We loved it!

This cottage has amazing views, it's clean, we all slept well in the beds, powerful shower, kitchen well equipped for self catering, loved the picnic bench for outdoor dining watching the sunset, useful utility area.

We'd love to come again to try out the surfing school.

Quarterdeck has a lovely position with brilliant sea views.

However it is in need of some TCL looks very tired in certain areas. Kitchen area not brilliant needs good spruce up looking very tired and the extractor fan is very dated and grubby. Tiles and edges need regrouting or replacing. Bathroom has been updated and is good, lots of hot water could do with a non slip bath mat, towels are rather on the small side. Bedroom needs decorating but bed and linens were lovely very comfy bed. Extension on side was very useful especially for drying off our doggies after their swim. Garden area was lovely and enjoyed sitting and enjoying the views. Cottage was comfortable overall just needs a uplift.

We've just had a glorious October half-term at Quarterdeck.

Toasty warm, the cottage feels homely and snug, and the cosy living-room really does have AMAZING views. Bedrooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and the cottage equipped with everything we needed. We loved exploring this area and will DEFINITELY be back to Quarterdeck.

We had a most enjoyable stay at Quarterdeck in a delightful area that we last stayed in nearly 20 years ago.

We found the bungalow offered every possible comfort and amenity that we could have asked for and was lovely and clean. The beds were extremely comfortable which resulted in a good nights sleep, something that we don't always get away from home The standard and cleanliness of the linen were far higher than most cottages we have stayed in and of the quality normally associated with top hotels. The view along the coast from the living room was one we will always remember to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. It was all the thoughtful extras provided by the owners that helped make the holiday, most comfortable outdoor chairs/loungers to enjoy the beautiful private garden, croquet, plenty of games as well as boards and a windbreak for the beach. Due to the location we only used the car once during our stay with superb coastal and estuary walks as well as the iconic Burgh Island to explore. A wonderful stay in a most comfortable property that we can highly recommend.

Bigbury is a nice traditional seaside village with a lovely beach and Island. Excellent Kayaking!

Quarterdeck's location was perfect with magical views from the lounge windows of the Coastline and Burgh Island, we saw fantastic sunsets every night.

The garden offers sun and shade and sun chairs for comfort. The property had surf boards to take down to the beach and a wind break. We were very lucky to have wall to wall sunshine all week. We enjoyed walking along the beach and on the way back stopping off for a drink at the Pilchard inn. Apart from a day out to Salcombe we stayed in Bigbury-on-sea all week. Had a very good meal at the White Hart in Modbury and lovely Fish and chips at Fryer Tucks in Challaborough. Thank you for a great holiday in Devon.
