Description

Standing on the banks of the River Dart, within a short stroll of Dartmouth's fine selection of cafes, wine bars, boutiques and restaurants, Bight Boathouse occupies an elevated position, boasting the most magnificent river views in either direction.

Part of the historic Bight Boatyard that stands prominently high over the estuary, Bight Boathouse is a traditionally styled, furnished, spacious, detached residence arranged over three floors, boasting its own private 8 x 4m, indoor heated swimming pool on the lower ground floor. Also equipped with sauna, poolside gym and table tennis room. Four spacious bedrooms occupy the top floor, three with river facing verandas equipped with tables and chairs for relaxing and enjoying the panoramic views. (care must be taken with children on all balconies, due to the considerable drop below). A spiral staircase leads down to the spacious, open plan living area, spanned by wall to ceiling windows to take full advantage of the mesmerising river vista. Furnished with 3 large settees and a large dining table, there is a pool table and further snug equipped with games, and videos to keep adults and children entertained for hours. A large well equipped kitchen will make catering for a large party a breeze and also offers a breakfast seating for 8. Spend summer meal times dining alfresco on the balcony equipped with patio table, chairs and barbecue, or while away the hours watching the river traffic come and go.

There is much on offer for all ages and interest in and around Dartmouth. A river cruise along the Dart to Totnes is by far the best way to take in the spectacular scenery or if you prefer, take the steam train from Kingswear to Paignton to enjoy the beautiful views. Stroll into the town and enjoy browsing the boutiques and galleries that line the cobbled streets. Dartmouth offers a multitude of dining venues to choose from fine dining, award winning fish restaurants, trendy cafes, tea rooms and cosy traditional pubs with open fires. If you are a beach lover head to the sheltered, sandy bay of Blackpool Sands, just 3 miles, where there are a number of water sports available to try and equipment to hire

We have just returned from a week in Bight Boathouse in October.

The views are fantastic, the kitchen splendid and the two parking spaces a real bonus in car crowded Dartmouth. Unfortunately, that is where any praise ends. The reality is thin, summer duvets, curtains hanging down, bathroom doors not locking, one shower with no pressure, one shower that leaks everywhere, very dangerous loose bricks on the upper balcony steps, central heating that is tepid at best. In addition the three settees are very uncomfortable.. The lower balcony is a crowded mess with pots full of weeds. The sauna that is still advertised, hasn't worked for several years and cannot be repaired. The list goes on and on. This house could be really nice. It isn't and I would not recommend it.

The house is beautiful, great location with fabulous views from every window and the facilities in it are fantastic for an enjoyable stay however there are two major issues that let it down the house needs a good deep clean ie lots of mould in the pool shower, the cooker hood covered in grease, the staircase hadn't had a good clean for a very long time etc and although the master bedroom has an on suite there is only one bathroom for the other three bedrooms with no shower only a useless hand held device and in our case that was for eight people to share.

If these problems were addressed it would be the perfect place to stay in beautiful Dartmouth.

We arrived at Bight Boathouse and were overwhelmed with our first impression.

Unfortunately soon after, we realised that all was not like the photos on the website. The main issue was that it was tired and needed updating. Positive Things. The view from this property is outstanding and the position is only a short walk to the centre of Dartmouth 10/10 The rooms were of good size and the bedrooms all had plenty of wardrobe space with amazing views. 10/10 Kitchen very well equipped. 10/10 The pool was enjoyed by all 8/10 Snooker table was great fun 10/10 The availability of Parking. 10/10 Negative Things The whole place was tired and needed some TLC 3/10 The bedroom wallpaper needed replacing as it was coming away from the walls. 3/10 Sauna kept tripping out, which meant that the shower and lights by the pool were inoperative 2/10 Gym equipment rusty and impossible to use. Being in the same room as the Swimming pool with condensation is not a good thing. 2/10 The swimming pool had a lot of sand in the bottom of it, also some small tiles were missing and had fallen into the pool. 3/10 Our holiday in Dartmouth was amazing. All our family enjoyed our stay in spite of all the issues that I have pointed out. We had 3 children and 6 adults with ages ranging from 10-73 it supplied us with a lot of happy memories. We will not be recommending the Bight Boathouse to anyone as unfortunately for the price it really does need some work to improve the standard.
