South Devon in autumn is a truly spectacular season. With the region’s landscape turning a kaleidoscope of burnt orange, yellow and brown, there is nothing better than heading out for a long ramble punctuated with muddy puddles and blankets of freshly fallen leaves.

From blustery cliff-tops that expose autumns wild elements, to sheltered leaf crunching woodland walks, South Devon enjoys trails to suit all tastes. At Coast & Country Cottages, autumn and walking combine two of our favourite things, so regardless of rain or shine, we urge you to get outside and explore.

Here are our top five best autumn walks in South Devon to inspire you this season…

A walk that provides some of the most outstanding views of Start Bay’s most breathtaking sights, this circular route includes elevated views of the fishing villages of Beesands and Hallsands, the ruins of South Hallsands and, in the distance, Start Point lighthouse.

On a crisp and clear autumn day, this walk is stunning with views far fetching, whilst in wilder weather it’s both moody and dramatic, offering true exposure to the elements. Afterward, snuggle down in the cosy Cricket Inn pub, and tuck into traditional fish and chips, or a roast lunch, trimmings and all! View the full walk

2. Dartmouth to Greenway, Dittisham

A popular circular walk, regarded to be one of South Devon’s very best in terms of showcasing natural beauty, this 10 mile loop encompasses stunning views of the Dart Valley and beyond. A challenging walk, expect to navigate a route that leads you along the riverside, through countryside fields and along woodland paths – perfect for autumn adventures. Stop for a rest (and a tipple or two!) at the popular Ferry Boat Inn, situated on the water’s edge. View the full walk

3. Dartington Estate

An 800 acre estate (around 8 miles if walked in full) enjoying stunning landscaped gardens, numerous public footpaths, forests, rivers and abundant wildlife. The Dartington Estate is a must visit during the autumn period, where you will find the grounds are a symphony of colour, with golds, oranges and rich reds of the maples. Best of all, there is a great cafe, The Green Table, serving nourishing food and hot cocoa. Explore the Dartington Estate

4. Loddiswell Woods

Well known for its peaceful riverside and forest scenery, the 3.5 mile route joins up with the old ‘Primrose’ Railway Line, which operated between Kingsbridge and South Brent in the late 1800’s. Whilst the railway has long gone, the walk meanders along the level riverside trail, providing a stunning autumn backdrop. After you’ve burnt up an appetite, be sure to stop at the Avon Mill Cafe situated in Loddiswell village for a hearty breakfast, brunch, lunch or afternoon tea. View the full walk

5. Totnes to Sharpham Vineyard

Situated at the head of the estuary of the River Dart, Totnes is the beginning of a spectacular walking route that follows the lower valley of the Dart towards Dartmouth. The first leg of the trail links Totnes to Ashprington, and subsequently, Sharpham Vineyard.

This popular route is lined with trees, and backed by rolling countryside, positively dancing with colour throughout autumn. Stop at the riverside vineyard and cheese-making centre at Sharpham, where you can sample both cheese and wine, and enjoy food at The Cellar Door cafe (open for lunch until the end of October), a popular establishment cooking delicious autumnal dishes.
