“The property is in a fantastic location right in the centre of Dartmouth, yet still on a quiet street with no noise.”

It is fully equipped for a comfortable stay and mostly decorated to a high standard. However, there are a few downsides to the property. Firstly, there is no parking which was a bit of an issue in the summer holidays. However, we managed to find a space in the market car park opposite on several occasions. There is also no dishwasher. Washing up for a family of 4 for a week’s stay became a bit of a chore. The sleeping arrangements of 2 double beds in the property were suitable for us with 2 small girls but may not suit everybody. The downstairs kitchen/living area space is also quite compact for a family, but sufficient if you are using the property as a base to explore, rather than spend a lot of time there. There is a small fold out table in the middle of the lounge/kitchen, which was broken on our arrival and we reported (and no-one came to fix) which doubles up as a coffee table/eating space using fold out chairs. However, it is very cramped for a family of 4 to eat a meal. The floor downstairs is also looking a little dirty/tired which is a shame as the rest of the property is decorated to a high standard. Overall, we probably wouldn’t return to the property given the premium price we paid for the summer holidays compared to value for money of other similar properties we have stayed in previously, but we would recommend to others wishing to use it as a base for exploring Dartmouth and South Devon.

The property

The Old Villa, a magnificent three-story home, is situated in a prominent area within South Devon AONB in Dartmouth.

The Old Villa is the perfect home base for a family of four, friends travelling together, or couples wishing to experience a seascape, within a few steps from a variety of local shops, restaurants, pubs, the harbour, and the beach.

The stylish, open-plan living area is where you can unwind after a day of exploring in front of the Smart TV and electric fire, while the aspiring chef in your party prepares delectable dishes.

After refreshing in the contemporary shower room, head outside to explore your surroundings, returning for some rest in one of the two king-size bedrooms on offer; the second is located on the second floor.

Awaken to an adventure-filled itinerary, perfect for kickstarting after a bite to eat at Rockfish, which serves delectable local fare, or some traditional British cuisine at The Cherub Inn, before visiting Dartmouth Museum, taking a stroll along the River Dart and Dartmouth Harbour, heading towards Compass Cove Beach, and ending up at Blackpool Sands, a stunning Blue Flag beach with crystal-clear waters.

By car, travel to Paignton and its many attractions, including firm favourites such as Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Paignton Pier, where you can eat fish and chips while overlooking the water, or perhaps venture to Clennon Gorge for a stroll through the wilderness.

Finish your escape by making it to Totnes Castle, reachable by a scenic walk alongside Longmarsh, before heading back to your home-from-home for sundowners.

Experience it all at The Old Villa.

The corridor on the first floor is very narrow. The very small decked area is accessed via an extremely narrow door requiring a step up. This will not suit guests of a larger frame or with less mobility.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

DARTMOUTH

Totnes 12 miles.

Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon. It offers a stunning waterfront, ancient narrow streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries plus many local events such as the annual Dart Music Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, along with the Dartmouth Food Festival held every October. There are many interesting cycling and walking routes around Dartmouth, including the South West Coast Path, the Dart Valley Trail and plenty of quiet country lanes. A trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway through picturesque countryside to Paignton is a must, and so is a boat trip across to Kingswear and on to Brixham, a pretty little harbour town. For those seeking some beach activities, there is a wide choice in the South Hams area such as Blue Flag Award winner Blackpool Sands, and Slapton Sands, both extremely popular and just a stone's throw from Dartmouth. A relaxing location in South Devon.
