Special events for the May half term in South Devon

The May half term is nearly upon us, and there are lots of exciting events taking place in the region during the school holidays. To help really maximise your May half term break in South Devon, we’ve collated a list of activities happening throughout the region for you to enjoy:

Dartmouth Castle

Smugglers and Seadogs
Sun 27 May – Fri 1 June, 11am – 5pm
Dartmouth Castle is situated in a stunning location on the edge of the Dart Estuary. Enjoy the coastal views as you explore the history of this historical building which has guarded Dartmouth for over 600 years. Smugglers and seadogs will dominate the castle during May Half Term, so expect to enjoy musket drills, a smugglers’ quest, and tales of dastardly deeds in Dartmouth’s swashbuckling past.

Hope Cove

Hope Cove Beer and Music Festival 
Fri 25th – Mon 28th May 

Bring in the Cove Café Bar’s 4th Birthday with a celebration of some of the country’s best craft beer and fantastic live music at their annual beer and music festival. This incredibly popular food and drink spot has developed dramatically in the past few years, creating quite a buzz amongst locals and holiday makers alike. With cult legend Beans on Toast headlines on the final night and Devon’s brightest Indie prospects, Tourists, playing on the Saturday, the weekend promises to be one not to forget!

Pennywell Farm

Unicorn week
May 26th – June 1st, 10am – 5pm
A family of unicorns are visiting Pennywell Farm during May Half Term, and they will be filling the farm with magic and sparkle. These majestic creatures are visiting for the week and there are some extra special events planned including unicorn rides, face painting, treasure hunts and a ‘University of unicorns’ area where you can swat up on unicorn knowledge. In addition, enjoy a full day with all the farm animals (including miniature pigs), free rides and fabulous shows.

South Devon Railway

Spring Beer Festival
25th – 28th May, 11am until late
Running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes (Littlehempston), the South Devon Railway is one of our region’s two steam train operators. The unforgettable experience of riding a magnificent steam train is complemented by the beautiful woodland scenery the journey takes in, along with the delights of the traditional stations at both sides of the journey. The beer and cider festival will be in full swing over the May Bank Holiday weekend, with trains running all day departing from each end of the line, at frequent intervals. Stop off at the midway journey point of Staverton to enjoy the festivities.

Coleton Fishacre, The National Trust

Wild Wednesday
2pm – 4pm
The South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to three National Trust properties (Coleton Fishacre, Greenway, Overbecks) all of which offer a great day out, complete with historical interest, stunning views and fresh country air. This May Half Term, Coleton Fishacre is hosting a ‘Wild Wednesday’ event where you can expect to engage in an activities such as cooking on the campfire, pond dipping and hill rolling.

Dartington Food Fair
Sunday 27-Monday 28 May
Working alongside Food and Drink Devon, the May Bank Holiday weekend at Dartington will be full of foodie fun. TV star-chef Richard Hunt and MasterChef’s Ben Palmer are amongst other renowned chefs taking part in a number of demonstrations during the fair. Situated at the Shops at Dartington, expect a fabulous foodie event, celebrating the very best of the thriving food and drink community in Devon.

Mud Larks Fun Run

Sunday 27th May, from 10am
During the Food Fair, Dartington are also hosting their first ever Mud Larks Fun Run. The course has been designed for thrill seeking families, so expect to tackle the likes of a 500 foot long zipline, rock climbing, tyre obstacles and a dry kayak hill climb! Children must be 8 years or older in order to join in with this one.

Kingsbridge food and drink festival

Friday 1st June – Sunday 3rd June

The thriving market town of Kingsbridge will host its annual Food and Music Festival over the first weekend in June. This family friendly event offers a line-up of live entertainment to suit all tastes, along with delicious street food from some of the finest local Devon businesses. The festival also includes a popular ‘Kids’ Zone’ where children can enjoy a range of activities such as fire lighting, bouncy castles, face painting and dancing at the fancy dress disco!

Meet Titan The Robot!
29th May
Last but by no means least, Woodlands Family Theme Park near Dartmouth, always hosts a range of fun events, from concerts to educational activities. During the summer Half Term, for one special day only, Titan the Robot is taking a break from his busy schedule and is visiting Woodlands Family Theme Park. He is planning on entertaining everyone he meets with a jaw-dropping show that blends comedy, street theatre and music.
