Jane Baxter of Wild Artichokes is one of South Devon’s best-known chefs, renowned for turning our finest local produce into inspiring, nutritious dishes.
Jane’s career has taken her to top restaurants like the River Café in London and the Riverford Field Kitchen, with seven years in the middle spent cooking in the South Pacific. She won two Guild of Food Writers awards for the first of her two Riverford cookbooks, and her writing credits also include ‘Leon Fast Food Vegetarian’, ‘Leon Fast and Free’, and ‘Leon Happy Salads’. Jane also has a regular column in the Saturday Guardian Cook supplement and contributes to a range of magazines.
With all this in mind we were delighted when Jane agreed to provide us with three mouthwatering recipes for our South Devon Cookbook.

Jane joined us in the sumptuous setting of Hillfield Farmhouse to show us how to make the squash, bean and corn stew that she contributed to our cookbook.
In the first part of the video, Jane talked to us about her favourite South Devon food producers and gave us some advice about getting into cookery. She also had some tips for those wanting to make one of the recipes in our guide.
In the second part of the video, Jane explained the idea behind Wild Artichokes. We also asked her about what she loves most about her job, which involves cooking in her restaurant, catering for weddings and other events, writing books, teaching and more.
